A minor health issue wasn’t surprising under the circumstances.
As Michelle drove past an inconspicuous little pharmacy, she decided to stop.
Once inside, the doctor greeted her warmly.
“Do you have something that can help someone feel better and sleep more soundly?” Michelle asked.
Hearing this, the doctor inquired, “What’s causing the discomfort?”
“It’s probably from being too worked up lately. There’s been a lot going on.”
The doctor nodded. “I can prescribe something to clear the heat and reduce irritation. I’ll also include some medicine to aid sleep. It’ll take at least three courses to gradually balance everything. If symptoms persist, a hospital checkup might be needed.”
Michelle frowned. “How long are three courses?”

Three months! That would drive Michelle up the wall.
Michelle had lived with Diana long enough to know how exaggerated her complaints could get.

Even a small scrape would have Diana acting as if she’d broken her leg.
A three–month regimen of medicine? She’d probably dramatize it to no end.
Back when Abigail was around, she’d handled Diana’s tantrums. But now it was just Michelle.
Expect her to play along? Not a chance.
Thinking this, she shook her head. “Do you have anything that works faster?”
The doctor hesitated. “There are faster options, but they may have side effects. Traditional remedies generally take time.”
“Side effects don’t matter, as long as I can sleep well and feel better.”
The doctor hesitated for a while until Michelle handed over several thousand dollars in cash.

Twenty minutes later, Michelle returned to the Robinson Manor with the medicine.
Sure enough, as soon as she stepped inside, Diana’s voice came wailing from the living room.
Diana lay half–reclined on the couch, hand supporting her head, moaning as if she were in agony.
Seeing Michelle, she turned up the theatrics even more.
“Oh, Michelle, you’re finally back! I have the worst headache. I can’t sleep. My head feels like it’s going to explode!”
Michelle approached her quickly.
“Diana, you must be overheated. On my way back, I stopped at a pharmacy and picked up some medicine. The doctor said it works quickly. Take it, and you’ll feel better in no time.”
She handed Diana the medicine with a glass of water.
Predictably, Diana looked as if she were about to cry.
“I don’t want to take it! It’s that wretched Abigail’s fault I’m sick. Michelle, my life is so miserable!”
Michelle had been expecting this. She maintained her patience.

“Diana, don’t say that. Making yourself sick over someone like her isn’t worth it. Just take the medicine and get better. We’ll need all our energy.”
Still, Diana refused. Michelle, seeing her carry on like this, couldn’t help but think how much easier it would be if the old woman just kicked the bucket.
Of course, she kept that thought to herself, maintaining a calm demeanor.
“Diana, if you let yourself fall apart, Abigail will only feel more triumphant. We need to stay strong so we can see how she struggles after the divorce.”
Michelle’s reasoning finally got through. Reluctantly, Diana took the medicine.
“You’re right, Michelle. I need to recover so I can enjoy watching that wretched woman suffer.”
Not long after, Diana felt the effects of the medicine and dozed off.
Michelle breathed a sigh of relief.
The stuff seemed effective enough. If Diana acted up again, Michelle would just give her more of it.
She made a mental note to pick up additional doses when she had the chance.

Now that she was sick, she felt it was only right that Abigail took proper care of her.
So, Abigail suffered a great deal back then.
Michelle had also seen Marcus wake up from a nightmare and call Abigail late at night.
Abigail would be on the other end of the line, telling him stories all night long.
Back then, even as her rival, Michelle had to admit Abigail’s life wasn’t easy.
But now? Michelle couldn’t help but think she’d brought it on herself.
Taking care of them was easy.
She could give Diana medicine and Marcus some snacks so that everyone would be happy.

Both of them were satisfied, and she got a bit of peace and quiet.
Michelle was feeling rather smug when Anthony returned from his meeting.
She quickly retreated to Diana’s room, pretending to massage Diana’s head as if she were soothing her to sleep.
When Anthony stepped inside and saw the scene, he exhaled in relief.
“She…”
Before he could finish, Michelle motioned for silence.
He obediently held his tongue and waited by the door.
Moments later, Michelle stepped out. As if on cue, she stumbled and nearly fell.
Anthony was quick to catch her.
“What’s wrong? Why do you look so weak?”
Michelle shook her head faintly. She had planned ahead, wiping off her lipstick and dusting her lips with powder to appear pale and frail.
She shook her head. “Marcus had a nightmare last night, so I stayed up telling him stories. I didn’t get much rest. It’s nothing.”

She had barely rested the night before, and now she’d spent the whole day handling Diana’s drama.
Her worn–out appearance made him uncomfortable.
“Michelle, you’ve been working so hard lately. You’re still not fully recovered, yet you’ve been running around for the family’s sake.”
Michelle shook her head as they made their way downstairs and settled on the couch.
“I’m fine. It makes me happy to help. Anthony, just promise you won’t think I’m useless.”
Anthony shook his head emphatically. “Of course not. I don’t know what I’d do without you right now.”
He brought her a cup of water, and she couldn’t help but find his attentiveness a little amusing.
There was a time she thought Anthony was shrewd.
Now she realized it was not true.
He was truly foolish.
Abigail had endured so much while caring for his mother and
son.

And here she was, employing a few simple tactics to calm the household, and suddenly Anthony was all over her with guilt and gratitude.
It was almost laughable.
Although Michelle and Abigail had once been adversaries, she still felt a pang of sympathy. She couldn’t help but think Abigail deserved better.
