Chapter 112 Rejection
2/7
Feeling increasingly uneasy with his two colleagues laughing behind him, Justin decided to take matters into his own hands and simply grabbed Amy’s hand, pulling her outside.
“I can’t talk to you here. Come out with me,” he said in a somewhat muffled voice.
“Where are you taking me?” Amy asked.
Watching Justin pull Amy’s hand and head out, the two colleagues munched on their night snack while laughing, as if they couldn’t wait to attend their wedding right now.
Justin yanked Amy straight into the hallway, where the dim lighting and eerie silence reigned supreme, as everyone else had already clocked out. Amy had to hop up on a step to meet Justin
eye to eye.
“What’s the rush, dragging me out here? Can’t we chat inside?” Amy teased, and her smile was mischievous. “Or is it because you’re already angling to be my beau so soon?”
But Justin’s tone was dead serious. “Amy, cut the clowning around. This is the precinct, my turf. Keep this up, and it’ll only give me a headache.”
Amy waved it off. “I’m not messing around. I’m being dead. serious here, or do you think I’m embarrassing you by showing up?”
Justin furrowed his brow. “That’s not it at all. I’m just not great at playing games with emotions. I’m looking for something solid, not…”

His mind went completely blank, like a computer that was blue–screened. Justin felt his heart pounding in his chest.
Even in the dim light, he was positive his face was beet red.

Before he could wrap his head around what just happened, Amy pulled away, her eyes sparkling as she said, “I told you, I’m not kidding. I want something real too. Don’t tell me you don’t feel the same way about me at all.”
Justin finally snapped out of it, realizing he’d just lost his cherry and feeling kind of miffed.
But as a guy, there wasn’t much he could do about it, so he just
had to stew inside.
Justin’s brow furrowed even deeper as he took a step back and gave Amy a piercing look.
Amy wasn’t expecting him to react like this. For a second, she tensed up because of his response, and the smile on her face slowly faded. Was he mad? No way, right? He couldn’t be upset. over something so minor, could he?
The next thing out of Justin’s mouth left Amy completely flabbergasted.
“Amy, don’t toy with me,” he said.
Amy was taken aback and vowed she’d never intended to mess with him.
But soon, she realized he didn’t believe she was genuine in her feelings for him.

This ticked her off too. “Why do you always assume I’m messing with you? Do I look like someone who can’t be trusted? Am I not worthy of genuine love?”
“I… I didn’t mean it like that,” he stammered.
He just felt like they came from two different planets. Her life was vibrant and full of color, while his was a different story entirely.
He couldn’t fathom why Amy suddenly wanted to pursue him, though he had to admit he liked her too.
Amy stared at him and asked, “What do you mean, then?”
Justin dipped his head slightly, momentarily at a loss for words.
Seeing his blank expression, Amy knew he couldn’t explain himself, so she gave him a scowl and made to leave.
As she passed him, Justin grabbed her wrist.
They stood there, face to face.
“Amy, I just need a straight answer. Do you really want to give this a shot with me?” Justin asked.
Amy shook off his hand and huffed, “What do you mean by ‘shot‘? I’m not some item in a store! I genuinely like you and think you’re a stand–up guy, so that’s why I’m chasing after you like this.”
As for why she liked him, she couldn’t put her finger on it. Love was inherently complicated. They were inexplicable sensations.

After hearing her out, Justin turned around to face her back and said, “Alright, go gel some rest. I have a day off tomorrow, and I’ll give you an answer tomorrow night.”
Upon hearing this, Amy spun around. “Tomorrow night?”
His hasty reply made her feel uncertain. She thought, “He can’t be serious about agreeing so quickly, right? Could it be that he’s going to turn me down tomorrow night? But he doesn’t have to rush, does he?”
The thought of having to wait until tomorrow night had Amy feeling anxious. But to save face, she pretended to be cool, nodded, and then walked away.
It took Justin over ten minutes to gather himself and head back to his office.
His quick response left her feeling a bit unsure for a sec. She pondered, “He wouldn’t say yes so fast, would he? Maybe he’s just setting me up for a rejection tomorrow night? But why the rush?”
The idea of waiting till tomorrow night had Amy on edge. But she played it cool, nodding calmly before turning to leave, like a
boss.
Justin took his sweet time, more than ten minutes, to chill out
and head back to the office.
Seeing him come back solo, Justin’s two colleagues pounced on
him.
“Why the solo return, bro?”

Justin gave them the evil eye. “Back off, guys.”
Spotting the lipstick stain on Justin’s lips and the telltale

blush on his face, his colleagues instantly jumped to the wrong conclusion, thinking they’d just had some action.
They scurried back to their desks and dived into their snacks
like there’s no tomorrow.
“Looks like someone’s about to get taken off the singles‘ market!”
“Remember the pact, Justin. First to bag a girlfriend treats the whole office to dinner.”
Justin tossed a pen at them.
“Mind your snacks, dudes!” he said with a grin.
The two chuckled, getting the hint.
The next morning, Abigail woke up to a barrage of messages from Amy. She took her time, reading each one carefully.
Amy: [Abigail, he said he’ll give me an answer tomorrow!]
Amy: [What do I do? He’s not going to reject me this soon, is he?]
Amy: [What if he says no? Should I keep chasing him?]
Amy: [Abigail, what should I wear for tomorrow’s meet–up?]
From the tone of her messages, it was clear Amy had probably spent the whole night tossing and turning.

And just as Abigail finished reading, Amy’s call came in. Abigail, eager to know what happened last night, answered the phone in a flash.
