Xander leaned in again, a smirk tugging at the corner of his lips. “Are you confusing the roles of lawyers and judges?” he said, his tone almost casual. “A lawyer’s job is simple–get paid to present the evidence that benefits their client. As for upholding justice and fairness? That’s the judge’s job, not mine.”
Abigail felt a strange mix of skepticism and agreement. She thought it sounded a bit contradictory, but somehow, what he said made sense.
Seeing her deep in thought, Xander poured her a drink, his expression full of mischievous amusement.
“I remember when we were in school, you were one of the top students in our field,” he continued, his voice smooth and mocking. “But even the sharpest sword needs to be sharpened, right? You’ve been out of work for so long, it’s no surprise your mind’s a little… trapped.”
Abigail couldn’t help but notice the subtle dig–he had clearly come prepared.
Not only did he know about her divorce, but he also knew she hadn’t been working for a while.
As they continued their conversation, Felix, sitting too far away to hear clearly, fumed in frustration. He wanted to jump in, to interrupt them before this conversation went any further. He could practically feel his blood boiling. If only he could get closer, he’d throw down the gauntlet without a second thought.

Felix had no idea that Justin and Amy were walking hand in hand not far away.

They had reserved a table at a riverside restaurant just around. the corner from Felix’s neighborhood.
By this hour, most of the local restaurants had closed for the night, and only the street’s night markets and food stalls were still open.
So, Amy had decided to bring Justin here.
But before they even got inside, Amy spotted Felix, sneaking around behind a tree.
He was wearing a hoodie and a face mask, trying to hide, but Amy had known him since they were kids.
Felix could be covered in ashes, and she’d still recognize him.
“Felix? What’s he doing?” Amy whispered.
Justin followed her gaze. “Is that Felix?” he asked, squinting.
Amy nodded, and her curiosity was piqued. “Come on, let’s go check it out.”
Felix, completely distracted by Abigail, didn’t notice the approaching figures. Suddenly, someone slapped him on the shoulder. He jumped, startled, and let out a sharp yelp.
Amy was caught off guard by his reaction, but Justin- surprisingly–remained calm.

enough to draw Abigail’s attention from across the way
She looked up, squinting toward the source of the noise. She could barely make out figures that vaguely resembled Felix, Amy, and Justin, but… she wasn’t quite sure.

Felix jumped to his feet and turned around, relief flooding him when he saw it was only Amy and Justin.
“You two? What are you doing here?” he asked, trying to hide. his nervousness.
Amy shot him a dramatic eye roll. “That’s the question I should be asking. What are you sneaking around for?”
As she said that, Amy glanced in the direction Felix had been looking.
When she saw Abigail sitting with a man, the pieces clicked into place.
“Felix, are you stalking her?” she asked, her voice sharp with realization.
Before she could finish, Felix slapped a hand over her mouth, then pulled both Amy and Justin behind the tree to crouch.
down.
“Shh! Keep it down!”
A wave of embarrassment hit him like a freight train–caught red–handed like a creeper.
Amy and Justin were totally in sync, quietly hiding with him.

“What’s going on, Felix? Your secret admirer hasn’t even shown up yet, and your rival is already here?” Amy teased, and her eyes gleamed with amusement.
Felix had always seemed like the perfect catch–handsome, suave, with countless women chasing after him.
But it was a different story when it came to love. Turns out, the guy was having a hell of a time getting someone to actually fall for him.
Felix shot her a look, unimpressed.
Amy wasn’t bothered in the least. With a smug grin, she grabbed Justin’s hand and showed it off in front of him, clearly enjoying
herself.
“Maybe you should take a page out of my book, Felix. Cut through the nonsense and make it happen. Be decisive.”
Felix immediately picked up on the obvious chemistry between the two of them. It was practically written in the stars.
He shot Justin a sympathetic glance.
“Mr. Moore, good luck with that.”
Amy pouted at him. “Felix, don’t hate just because you can’t get the girl. You can’t stand to see someone else happy, huh?”
Abigail couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off as she watched the three of them lurking around in the shadows.
She found herself glancing over at them more and more, and her

Amy’s bright red dress caught her eye, and the more she looked, the more familiar it seemed.
Xander noticed her gaze and followed it. “Do you know them?” he asked.
Abigail stood up, still unsure. “I’m not sure, but I’m going to find
out.”
She started walking in their direction.
Felix had his back to her and didn’t notice. But Justin, ever alert, spotted her first.
“Abigail’s coming!” he hissed.
Felix froze for a second, unsure if he should turn around.
Amy, glancing in Abigail’s direction, immediately covered her mouth in surprise.
“Oh no, she’s really coming,” Amy whispered.
Felix’s instinct kicked in–run.
There was no way he was going to let Abigail find out he’d been following her, eavesdropping like a creep. It would be so embarrassing.
With that thought, he shot up and bolted.
But before he could make it far, Abigail called him out.

“Mr. Rowe? What are you all doing here?”

Well, that was it. Running was off the table now. It would look
even worse.
Might as well face the music and act casual.
Felix gritted his teeth, took a deep breath, and pulled off his mask. Trying to look nonchalant, he turned around with a forced smile.
“Small world! You’re here for a late–night snack too?”
Amy and Justin exchanged confused looks.
Small world? Isn’t he the one who’s been following her around?
But when he thought about it, it made sense. He hadn’t exactly won her over yet, and if Abigail knew he’d been stalking her, he’d never be able to hold his head up again.
Felix quickly pinched Amy behind the tree to snap her out of her daze.
“Right, what a coincidence, Abigail! Never thought I’d run into you here,” Amy said, forcing a polite tone.
It was the first time Abigail had seen Amy act so awkward, and for a moment, she wasn’t sure how to react.
But then her gaze fell on Felix and Justin, their hands casually entwined, and her eyes narrowed.
“You two?” Abigail asked, raising an eyebrow in surprise, her

Seeing Abigail’s raised eyebrow, Felix quickly jumped in to redirect her attention.
“Yeah! They’re together now! Came here for a date!”
Amy shot him a glare that could cut glass.
Classic Felix’s move–never missing an opportunity to stir the
pot.
Justin, his cheeks a little flushed, scratched the back of his head awkwardly.
“We just got together, actually. We were planning to tell everyone when we had the chance, maybe invite you guys to dinner sometime, but… guess we bumped into you tonight instead.”
Abigail seemed to warm up to the idea, chatting easily with them.
Meanwhile, Xander stood up and walked over, sensing the vibe.
“Your friends?” he asked, glancing at the group.
Everyone turned their attention to him.
Amy’s eyes widened in recognition.
Back in college, when she and Abigail were close, she’d heard about Xander–one of the guys who’d been pursuing her best friend.
“Xander?” Amy asked, incredulous.

“Right, Amy!” Xander said, giving a quick nod. “Small world, huh? Didn’t expect to run into you here.”
In an instant, everything clicked for Amy.
Of course–Xander was definitely a rival. Felix was smart to scout out the competition.

Late–night street food? More like a stroll down memory lane. No way this was just a casual meetup.
Determined to help Felix out, Amy plastered on a big, bright smile.
“Yeah, it’s been forever! What a coincidence running into you here. Hey, how about we grab a table together? You don’t mind, right?”
Xander nodded enthusiastically. “Of course, Abigail’s friends are my friends. It’d be my pleasure.”
Felix, on the other hand, was silently rolling his eyes.
“Oh, really? Abigail’s friends are his friends now?” he thought. “The way he says that, you’d think they were best buds or something. So not cool.”
