Piper stopped faking it. “Yeah, I lied. I wanted
to take everything away from her. It worked,
didn’t it?”
For the first time, my dad hit Piper as hard as
he used to hit me. “Why! How could you treat
us this way? We have always been good to
you?”
Piper was seething “You guys were good to me
but where does an adopted daughter stand?”
“Why would you even care? For years, you

media every year, but I ignored it.
Twenty years later, I had a kid. When I was
blowing the candles on my cake, I got a text
from a lawyer. My dad wanted to say goodbye,
and he wanted me to inherit everything he
owned.
I said that I was busy and kissed my daughter,
who was holding a cake. “Mommy, you’re the

cake!”
My past was over. I had my own family now.
