Chloe and Sam froze. They looked at each
other for just a second, but it was enough to
show me they were scared.
Chloe, recovering first, became hysterical. “Are
you kidding me? You’re about to die and you
still tryin‘ to lie?
But Chad clearly had doubts, and the pressure
he was applying loosened. “You have a
witness? Where are they?”
Taking advantage, I pushed past him, grabbed
my phone, and started to panic–text.
The issue was that I didn’t have Penny’s
number.
Seeing me fumble around, Chloe looked scared.
“Chad, that monster killed our child, don’t let
her get away with it! Get justice for our son!”
I turned to Chloe, trying to stall for time. “I
didn’t do anything! This was your fault!”
“Liar!”
“Sarah, why would I hurt my own child?” Chloe
shrieked.
Sam added fuel to the fire. “Sarah, I never
thought you’d do this. You killed her child, and
now you’re lying about it!”
I clenched my teeth. I looked at my boyfriend, at
my so–called best friend.
Then it clicked. This is what they wanted.
“I see it now. You two are in on this together!”
That caught Chad’s attention, and he looked at
me, his eyebrows furrowed.
I kept goina. “Chloe makes herself miscarry and
<
blames me, hoping you’ll kill me. Then, Sam is
free, and you’ll go to jail, maybe get the death penalty, and then, you two can…”
Chloe and Sam exchanged another nervous glance.
Chad saw it. He looked shocked.
“Chloe, is that true?”
He stared intently at Chloe, trying to get a straight answer.
Chloe looked petrified, backing away. “N–no! Honey, please, don’t listen to her! She’s scared, so she is making this stuff up!”
“Honey, you know how much I wanted a child. I took so many meds, I was seeing doctors everywhere. You really think I could betray you like that?”
Chad looked like he believed her.

“Honey, I was carrying a boy! The family heir!
Chloe wailed.
Chad’s anger flared up again. He glared at me,
breathing like a bull.
“Sa–rah!”
“You. Gotta. Die!”
Chad walked closer to me, the knife glinting in
the light.
I kept backing up, until I was pinned against the
wall.
“Chad, wait. I swear I have a witness. She
caused this herself, I have proof…”
“Die!”

Chad shouted, raising the blade.
Just then, Penny came barreling in, slamming
into Chad, and sending him stumbling back.
Chad looked confused.
“Penny?”
