Chad’s face darkened.
He picked up Tiffany and snarled at me.
“Brittany, if you don’t want to go to the gala,
then just don’t! We’re leaving right now.”
“Tiffany, you can come with me to the gala
tomorrow. I want to introduce you to everyone.”

Tiffany turned around, raised her eyebrows at
me, and then walked out the door.
That night, Chad didn’t come home.
The next day, the news was talking about Chad’s gala.
Tiffany stepped out of the car in a designer
dress, clinging to Chad like she was some prize he had won.
I scoffed and sent her a text.
[Tiffany, congrats for finally being with Chad.]
[You’re going to die of radiation poisoning in less than a month, so make sure you enjoy it.]
[Tell Chad he’s going to die too. Welcome to hell.]
After I sent the text, I turned off my phone.

Then, I took the train to the suburbs.

Five months later, nothing had changed. The
blood on the train tracks had been cleaned up.
I stood by the train tracks.
I stared in the distance, and when the train
came, I jumped on the tracks.
The last thing I heard was Chad screaming my
name.
“Brittany!”
The train rushed past Chad.
His heart raced, and then he saw Brittany,
standing there in one piece.
Once the shock had passed, he felt annoyed.
“Brittany, what are you doing?! I only knew you

were going to be here, because someone
texted me, otherwise you would have died like
your parents!”
He talked down to her like usual.
But Brittany didn’t say anything, and she didn’t
try to get away from him.
His bodyguard spoke up.
“Boss, I think something’s wrong with the Madam.”
Chad froze.
He looked down at Brittany and realized she’d
lost a ton of weight, she was almost unrecognizable.
He lifted her head to look at her, but her face
was ashen.

“Brittany?”
Chad felt his heart begin to race. He grabbed
Brittany’s shoulders, but she didn’t respond.
Chad panicked.
He checked her pulse.
He picked her up, and yelled at the bodyguard.
“Hurry up! Drive us to the hospital!”
During the drive to the hospital, Chad clutched
Brittany in his arms.
Blood soaked her clothes, and dripped
everywhere.
The drive was 30 minutes, but Chad got there
in 10.

Doctors rushed to help.
One of the doctors asked,
“Mr. Chad, has your wife visited any areas with
high radiation? Her symptoms look like
radiation poisoning.”
Chad realized that Brittany spent 5 months in
the mountains.
“No way. Brittany couldn’t have gone to any
radiation zones. I kept her at that mountain
cabin for five months…”
The doctor realized what had happened.
Brittany was moved into the ICU.
Chad sat in the waiting room, smoking.
Tiffany called a bunch of times, but Chad
ignored her calls.

He went to a contact in his phone, and texted them.
[Look into the mountain cabin, find out why
nothing grows there, and see if there’s any radiation.]
Five months ago, when he saw Brittany push Tiffany down the stairs, he got angry.
Brittany was acting stubborn.
So he figured if he left her in the wilderness,
she’d have time to reflect.
Tiffany told him she knew of a cabin, and that
there were no plants or dangerous animals,
which made it perfect to punish her with.
Chad went and scouted the area.
He thought it was safe, so he left Brittany
there.
