“Hey! Even you can’t barge into my room and
assault my girlfriend.”
I rolled my eyes.
Girlfriend. Please.
Ethan let go of his mother’s wrist.
I glanced at her.
The normally poised socialite was purple with
rage.
“Your girlfriend?” She glared at me and
yanked the girl forward.
I looked her over.
Younger than me, maybe twenty. Definitely
old money. Delicate, but classy.
Not like me, the daughter of a new–money
guy.
Ethan’s mom finished her sentence.
“What about Veronica? She’s your fiancée!”
Fiancée?
<
I focused on the girl.
I knew who she was.
Before we broke up, Ethan’s family had
announced his engagement to Veronica, the
daughter of the Cheng family.
Ethan had trashed the engagement party, but
the deal was still on.
The Chengs. Real old money.
“Bullshit!”
Ethan swore. “You marry her if you want.
<
Don’t rope me into it.”
His mother trembled. “Ethan, I’m your
mother!”
“Oh.”
Ethan ran a hand through his hair. “Get Dad
to marry her then. Just leave me out of it.”
He probably didn’t mean to be cruel, but
Veronica’s face crumpled.
Poor little rich girl, probably never been treated like this. Her eyes filled with tears.
Ethan realized he’d gone too far.
ᄀ
He touched his nose, his voice softer. “Hey,
don’t take it personally. I’m not dissing you.”
But then, he added, “I’m just trying to tell dear old Mom that everyone but Olivia looks like a skeleton to me. Just bones and skin.”
As if that wasn’t enough, he grinned at his mother. “Mom, that includes you.”
His mother stormed out.
She only had the one precious son. Spoiled rotten since the day he was born. He’d inherited her arrogance and her fire. There wasn’t a place in this city he wouldn’t burn

After they left, Ethan turned to me, raising an eyebrow. “So? Wasn’t I awesome just now?”
He leaned closer. “Regret breaking up with
me yet?”
I cupped his face in my hands.
“Out.”
He froze. “What?”

I dropped my hands and went to his closet,

pulling out the clothes I hadn’t bothered to
collect after the breakup. “I’m getting
dressed. Out.”
“Oh.”
The mighty Ethan slunk out, closing the door
behind him.
