Chapter 33 My Request Is Simple

As Jennifer caught sight of Sarah carrying the medicinal soup, a flicker of sarcasm danced in her eyes.
“Here we go again,” she thought.
In the past, every time Jennifer brewed her traditional medicine, Sarah would conveniently whip up a bowl of her own soup.
Asher would always praise Sarah for her thoughtfulness, while Jennifer’s hours of effort were brushed aside as if they didn’t matter.
She mused, “Well, not anymore. If Sarah wants to play the hero, I won’t be the fool who competes for his attention.”
Sarah said sweetly, “Hey, Asher, I made this medicinal soup for you this morning. I noticed you were struggling with your migraine last night. While I can’t make traditional medicine, this soup should help ease your headache. Give it a try.”
Asher looked at Sarah with appreciation. “You didn’t have to do that. You could have just let the staff handle it.”
Sarah replied, her voice soft but firm, “Not a chance. You do so much for this family. Making a little soup is the least I can do.”
She wore a look of innocent devotion, and Asher felt a warmth in

his chest.

Just then, Daniel swaggered into the room, a smug grin on his face. “Wow, look at Sarah! She knows Asher is sick and even makes him soup. Meanwhile, some people just sit around and complain about favoritism without lifting a finger. Maybe they should take notes.”
Jennifer put down her cup, her expression laced with sarcasm. She mused, “Did all my efforts really mean nothing?”
Amanda jumped in, defending Jennifer, “Ms. Hargreaves has made medicine for Mr. Asher Hargreaves before! Can’t you see that, Mr. Daniel Hargreaves?”
Daniel smirked. “But she didn’t do it today, did she?”
Amanda retorted, “So what if she didn’t this time? Is it a crime? Mr. Asher Hargreaves hasn’t said anything about it!”
Amanda couldn’t stand how they always favored Sarah, the so–called innocent girl.
Sarah interjected quickly, “Daniel, Amanda’s right. Jennifer has made traditional medicine before. My soup doesn’t even compare to what she can do.”
Daniel scoffed. “Honestly, I think they’re about the same. Who knows, maybe Asher’s headache got better just because of the soup.”
Asher tried to defuse the tension. “Daniel, don’t stir the pot

here.”
Jennifer shook her head at Amanda, signaling her to drop it.
She thought there was no point in arguing.

Daniel fell silent for a moment, then turned to Jennifer. “You need to give me that new song today. The company needs it for review, and if it gets rejected, we’ll waste more time fixing it.”
Jennifer raised an eyebrow. “What new song?”
She hadn’t agreed to write anything for him.
Daniel said, irritation creeping into his voice, “Cut the act! I told you before, if you come back, I’ll let you write the lead single. But it has to be good–no room for garbage!”
Hearing this, Sarah felt a pang of annoyance at Daniel for still letting Jennifer write songs.
She looked up and said, “Jennifer, I’m so envious of you. I wish I could be as talented as you one day.”
Daniel quickly reassured Sarah, “You’re doing great, Sarah. If it weren’t for Jennifer throwing a tantrum, I wouldn’t have everf considered using her songs.”
At that moment, Jennifer lost her appetite.
She stood up, leaning heavily on her cane. “Perfect timing, because I don’t want to write a song for you.”

“Jennifer, hold on! What’s your problem? I’ve already agreed to use your song. What more do you want? You’re being unreasonable!” Daniel snapped.
Jennifer said, “I just said I don’t want to write a song for you. Do you understand?”
Her serious demeanor only fueled Daniel’s anger.
“How long do you plan to keep this up? Do you want to make this house a battlefield? Because of you, everyone is miserable!”
Jennifer replied coolly, “Then just pretend I don’t exist.”
She had no intention of dragging this conversation any further.
Jennifer mused, “I can’t stay in this house for another second.”
Jennifer was ready to leave, but Daniel blocked her path. “Jennifer, I’m using your song as the lead single this time, and I won’t ask for any changes. Isn’t that enough?”
Jennifer looked at him, bewildered.
“Is Daniel deaf?” she wondered.
Turning to Asher, she said, “Asher, I think I made myself pretty. clear earlier. If Daniel doesn’t get it, maybe you can explain it to him.”
Asher took a moment before speaking, “Jennifer, Daniel just

wants you to stay here with the family. He meant no harm. Please, if there’s anything you need, just let us know.”

Sarah chimed in, “Exactly, Jennifer, whatever you need, just say the word, and I’ll help any way I can.”
Daniel frowned. “Jennifer, direct your demands at us. Leave Sarah out of it. She owes you nothing.”
Seeing the tension, Amanda leaned in toward Jennifer and whispered, “Ms. Hargreaves, just state your demands quickly.”
Jennifer’s patience had reached its limit.
With a calm but firm voice, she replied, “My request is simple.”
