Chapter 35 If Not for the Promise to Grandpa
Robert hurried out the door.
He was so rushed from his shower that he had not even dried his hair properly, allowing droplets to trickle. down from the tips as he walked.
His expression was stern, clearly in a bad mood.
The journey from his room to the elevator felt like just a few steps, but upon arrival, he found the elevator was already on the ground floor.
Impatiently, Robert pressed the call button, frowning deeply as he waited.
Once in the elevator, he headed straight out of the hotel, making a beeline for the beach.
The beach still had clusters of people here and there.
In the dim night light, some could not resist pulling each other close for a kiss.
Robert scanned the crowd for Lily, but after checking several pairs, he realized she was not among them.
He licked his back teeth in frustration.
If it were not for his promise to his grandfather to look after her for e rest of his life, he would not have bothered coming out here.
With this thought, Robert moved toward a more secluded part of the beach.
Lily stood there, chatting with the singer and facing the sea breeze.
He was a wanderer who had visited many places. He shared stories of settling down wherever he found. appealing until the urge to move struck again.
Hugging her shoulders, she asked, “Why not settle down?”
He smiled. “Maybe I haven’t met someone who makes me want to.”
Turning to Lily, the singer asked, “What about you? Was that guy really your brother?”
She shook her head. “No, just a friend. He’s here for work, and I’m here…”
Pausing, she lowered her head and chuckled softly. “To heal, I guess. I just got divorced.”
She was eager to talk and share her feelings with someone.
The singer was taken aback. “You look so young. I didn’t expect you to be married.”
He then asked, “Why did you get divorced? Did you fight, or was there some unforgivable mistake?”
Lily shook her head. “No one was at fault. He just didn’t love me anymore. So, why cling to it, right?”
She looked at him, offering a smile.
The singer was at a loss for words.

With his guitar in hand, he suggested, “How about I sing you a song? I’m not great at comforting people.”
Lily remembered the emotive foreign song he had sung at the bar, which she had liked.
She nodded. “Sure.”
They sat by a large rock, and the singer began to sing after tuning his guitar.
She stood beside and gazed out at the sea, her hair fluttering in the breeze.
Most of his voice was carried away by the wind.
Though Lily could not catch much of the song, a wave of sadness overwhelmed her.
Throughout her life, she had faced many troubles but never shed tears, as crying was not her way of expressing emotions.
Yet, now, her emotions were on the brink of spilling over.
She wiped her eyes, managing a laugh. “Come on. What’s wrong with me? My eyes are just a bit uncomfortable.”
The singer paused his song briefly before continuing.
Robert arrived to see this scene.
Lily stood by the sea and covered her face, her body slightly bent.
She looked even more fragile and pitiful in that state.
He ignored the singer beside her.
She seemed to be crying as her shoulders trembled, but any sound was drowned out by the wind.
Robert did not approach immediately and instead watched from a distance.
After the song, the singer eventually stood up and approached Lily. “I don’t have anything for tears. Want to use my sleeve?”
He reached out.
She quickly wiped away her tears, still able to smile. “It’s okay. The sea breeze has dried them.”
He looked at her, sighing deeply.
Lily fixed her hair and turned around. “I feel much better. Your song-
She froze upon spotting Robert not far away.
