On the other end of the call, Robert paused briefly before acknowledging the message and ending the call. Samson stared at his phone for a moment, then raised an eyebrow at Lily. “Did you hear that? It was his intention for me to follow you after all.”
Lily remained silent, focusing on keeping up with Elijah’s strides. Deep down, she doubted Robert’s sincerity in merely brushing off Samson’s remark.
Outside, a rental car awaited them, which had been booked by Elijah earlier. Samson swiftly claimed the backseat upon spotting it, while Lily opted for the passenger seat Elijah silently followed Samson, and it was evident the two men had no interest in interacting as they avoided even glancing at each other during the ride.
Recalling Elijah once referring to her as his girlfriend, Lily found his words lacking credibility given his distant demeanor. Nonetheless, he had the day planned out, and the car headed toward Westend. Lily refrained from asking about their destination, merely observing the route.
As they neared their first stop, the area was already bustling with people. “Where’re we going first?” Lily inquired, peering out the window.
“Horizon Haven,” Elijah replied promptly. “It’s a famous tourist spot, and I thought you’d like to visit.”
Samson grimaced before texting Robert.
Meanwhile, Robert, just waking up, glanced at his phone. That man!ught your ex–wife to see Horizon Haven, the message from Samson read. Annoyed, Robert swiftly deleted it, focusing on getting ready. As he entered the hotel restaurant, his phone rang once more. Glancing at the caller ID, he ignored it, irritated by the interruption.
I haven’t even dealt with the issue that happened last night during the feast: how dare this person shamelessly call me
how?
Robert ordered his meal. Midway through, a woman entered the restaurant. Dressed for summer, she wore a long floral dress and a straw hat. Though Robert noticed her, he didn’t react. The woman, however, spotted him and approached with a practiced smile, hesitating briefly before making her way over.
“Mr. Taylor,” she called out as she approached him. Robert feigned ignorance, taking another spoonful of food.
Licking her lips nervously, the woman persisted, “I called you earlier, but you didn’t answer, Mr. Taylor.”
Robert paused, cleaning his mouth with a napkin before leaning back to regard her in silence.
Not daring to sit down, the woman maintained her smile as she spoke. “Mr. Taylor, I didn’t get a chance to speak to you much at last night’s dinner before you vanished. Mr. Morris was searching for you everywhere; we even grew concerned when you didn’t respond to our calls.”
Robert’s smile turned cold as he asked directly. “What were you concerned about? Worried I might have indulged in some indiscretion after reacting to the drugs?”
Her expression faltered, and her smile stiffened. “What do you mean, Mr. Taylor? I don’t understand.”
Arms crossed, Robert continued, “I’m sure you do. I don’t enjoy beating around the bush. It seems Mr. Morris isn’t interested in our collaboration, so I think that we should stop wasting each other’s time.”

Stunned, the woman reached out almost instinctively before retracting her hand. “There may be a misunderstanding, Mr. Taylor. Mr. Morris is committed to working with you, and our company has made extensive preparations.”
Clearly flustered, she appeared genuinely distressed.
Robert glanced up at her with curiosity. “I picked that glass of alcohol myself, and I find it hard to believe you orchestrated it so that I coincidentally picked the spiked one. How did Mr. Morris manage that?”
Amused, he added, “You even had a glass yourself, right?”
After a moment’s hesitation, she nodded innocently. “There’s nothing wrong with our drinks, Mr. Taylor. I don’t understand your concern.”
With a light laugh, Robert stood, his appetite lost. “Fine. Believe what y
will.”
As he turned to leave, the woman panicked, clutching his arm. “Mr. Taylor! Wait!”
