It seemed like he didn’t think I would actually
divorce him.
“You…”
I smiled and said, “Isn’t this what you wanted
the most? Why do you look so unwilling?”
He lifted his head.
“I didn’t. Divorce me, but you will regret it.”
He was so confident.
Even after we finished signing the paperwork,
he thought I was going to change my mind.
But I didn’t turn back until I saw him getting
in the police car.
He realized what was happening.
“Jessica! You’re really going to leave me.
We’ve been together for ten years. How can
you do this!”

He tried to rush forward and get on his knees,
but the police stopped him.
After the divorce, everything seemed better.
I checked out of the hospital. Before I left, the
nurse told me that Chad’s mom’s test results
were back.
Lily had shown up too.
All three of them had started yelling at each
other.
The nurse described everything in detail. I had

When I got to the room, the yelling was
intense.
Chad’s mom grabbed Lily by the hair and
bashed her head against the wall.
Lily tried to explain that she didn’t know
anything.
But I had shown all the evidence to Chad’s
mom. Nothing Lily said mattered.
“My son was talking to a girl for two years
and everything was going great.”
“But you had to step in. My son liked you. We
all helped him get with you. You wanted to
leave with a foreigner. Then you came back
and ruined everything.”
I wasn’t sure what Lily had done.
I pushed open the door and said, “What’s
going on? If I knew, maybe I wouldn’t get
divorced from Chad. It sounds like Lily was
the one who wanted Chad.”
Chad’s mom was excited when she heard me
speak.
She must have known that Lily and her son
weren’t going to take care of her.
I was the one who had taken care of her
every time she was sick. Chad wouldn’t even
show up. Lily would always show up and say
that she would take better care of her if she
was her daughter–in–law.
I had given them a live action soap opera.
1 knew that Lily and Chad weren’t going to
take care of them.
I said, “Jessica, I still think you should be with

She pulled on my hand. “I’m sick. You’re a
good kid. You can’t just leave me alone.”
I nodded. I wasn’t going to leave her alone.
She smiled and told Lily to leave.
When Lily left, I knew that I had guessed
right.
They had put on an act in front of me.
There had been no falling out. After Lily left, I
stayed to take care of Chad’s mom.
That’s when I gave the nurses some tips.
I moved my company away, out of the city.
When Chad’s trial started, I had too many
missed calls to count.
They were probably from Chad’s parents.
I answered the last one and listened to them
yell at me.
They said I was an ingrate.
When they started talking about my parents, I
grabbed the phone and said, “Your son
cheated. You encouraged him. You’re the

They hired a famous lawyer to defend their
son.
The lawyer’s defense was tight.
Chad started to think that I was going to lose.
Lily sat next to him, wearing an expensive
