- 5.
I was talking to my lawyer about the divorce,
when Greg texted:
“Mom wants to see you. Come to the house.”
I didn’t care about Greg, but his mom has
always been nice to me.
She’s the closest thing I’ve ever had to a
mom.
I didn’t want to hurt her.
I took a cab to their place and heard laughter
when I walked in.
“She’s such a pushover. I texted her with my
brother’s phone, and she came running.”
く
Greg’s sister, Karen, was with Brittany on the
couch.
“She just used her body to trick my brother
into marrying her.
“But it’s okay. You’re back now. We all love
you. You’re the only sister–in–law I’ll ever
have.”
Brittany smiled and looked at me. “Karen,
don’t be too hard on her. She comes from a
different background. She has to act out,
because she doesn’t know any better.”
Yeah, everyone thinks I tricked Greg into
marrying me.
Everyone thinks I’m not good enough for him.
Everyone thinks Brittany should be his wife.
I don’t even deserve a seat at the table.
“Karen, apologize.”
Karen laughed. “Why would I do that?”
“Okay,” I said, holding up my phone. “|
recorded everything. I’m going to play it for
your mom.”
Karen and Brittany’s faces changed.
Greg’s mom is nice, but she hates that
Brittany hurt Greg.
If she knew what they just said, she’d yell at
Karen.
く
Brittany patted Karen’s arm and shook her
head.
Then she said to me, “Don’t think you can
stay here just because Grandma likes you.”
Stay here?
I’m not going to stay in this house.
But I wanted to say hi to his mom before I
left.
Then Greg walked in, helping his mom.
“What are you doing here?”
I was going to tell him what happened so he’d
leave me alone.
<
But Greg looked like he was actually happy.
I froze. Brittany stood up, looking sad.
“said I’m a stranger and shouldn’t be here.
She told me to leave…”
“?” Greg’s smile disappeared. He looked at
me like I was in trouble.
“I’ve been so patient with you. Brittany’s just
being nice, she’s here to see my mom after all
these years.
“You came so late, and now you’re kicking
Brittany out?”
Greg was trying not to yell. He looked at his
mom, who didn’t look happy. Then he said,
く
“Mom, you see? can’t act right. Don’t
blame me.”
“I regret marrying her.”
Brittany covered her mouth, but smiled.
Karen sat back, smirking, just waiting for me.
to break down.
But then I realized something.
I was calm.
Greg’s words didn’t even affect me.
