I pointed at Mike. “He’s planning to quit next
month. His resignation letter is on his
computer desktop.”
Mike jumped. “That’s a lie! Boss, I’ve been at
this company for five years. I’d never just
leave like that!”
The boss didn’t care who was leaving. He was
angry and someone had to pay.
I gave him an opening. “Mike, the boss trusts
you so much, and this is how you treat him!”

The boss glared at Mike. “All of you need to
focus on your work. I’m not paying you to play
these games!”
Lily saw the evidence and blanched. She
knew she couldn’t deny it anymore, so she
had to change her approach.
“I’m sorry, boss, it was my fault. It has
nothing to do with Mike. I didn’t know what
Mr. Jones liked.”
“It was all my fault. Just fire me.”
Tears started to fall.
Mike saw his intern helping him, and a wave
of emotion passed through him. “It was my
fault, boss, I didn’t explain it to her. Fire me
instead. She’s just an intern.”
The boss was sick of these two. Firing them
won’t bring back Mr. Jones.
“Cut the act, both of you are fired!”

After the boss stormed off, Mike reached for
me, I slapped him across the face. “You
freaking scumbag! You slept with my intern
and backstabbed me?! I would have been
blacklisted from the entire industry if I didn’t
have the evidence!”
The rest of my coworkers were still here, and
they froze to watch the drama.
Mike stared at me with rage. “You were the
one who said you had a headhunter reaching
out to you, you were planning to quit. I was

The boss was gone, so anything I said
wouldn’t affect me.
Besides, finding another job was normal.
I still played dumb. “When did I say that? I
never knew how awful you could be. You
cheated on me and you wanted to fire me!”
“The boss has been good to me. Why would I
leave? You’re the one who complained about
the boss, want me to remind you?”
The words will make their way back to the
boss, I am sure.
Seeing my coworkers staring, Lily started to
defend herself. “Ashley, you’re mistaken. Mike
was just taking care of me because I’m new.”

I scoffed. “No need to explain yourself, I don’t
want the trash anyway. It’s over. We’re done.”
“Fine, we’re done. You’re too strong, you act
like a guy. Who would want you? I was doing
you a favor, you should quit your job and get
married. That’s what women are for.”
I was prepared for how horrible Mike was, but
he still managed to surprise me. He looked
down on women and was terrible.
“You should worry about your own job. You
insulted Mr. Jones, you sent him to the
hospital! I’m sure everyone will know!”
Mike was stunned. He had to make things
right with Mr. Jones or he would get fired.
“That’s not true! I’ve devoted myself to this
company. The boss would never do that!”
I laughed. “Maybe the boss won’t fire you, but
she definitely will.” I turned to look at Lily.
“Lily, what are we going to do? I want to stay
here and pay back what I did wrong.”
Mike shook his head. “Don’t worry! I’ll take
the blame. The boss wouldn’t punish an
intern.”
Lily had stars in her eyes. “Mike, you’re
amazing! I’m so lucky to have you. I don’t
know what I would do if I got fired!”
I went home and wrote a post about how
Mike cheated on me and backstabbed me. I
