I didn’t take the smoothie.
I just looked back down at my laptop.
“I’ve got stuff to do tomorrow.
I don’t know if I can make it to the freezer.”
Mark’s smile twitched.
“No prob, hon.”
“It’s just that Kevin and I are both booked
solid.
I just want to make sure everything is OK.”
I wanted to laugh.
Oh, I’m sure you do.
The only reason he wanted me at that freezer
was so he could lock me inside and fake his
death.
I smiled right back at him.
“Sure, I’ll do it.”
The next day, I called his sister, Lisa.
“Hey, Lisa, Mark’s swamped today, and I’m
<
busy, too. He asked if you could swing by the
freezer and make sure everything is in order.”
Lisa had always wanted to work at her
brother’s company, but Mark didn’t think she
was responsible enough.
She was so excited, she practically screamed. “Carol, you’re the best! I’ll check it out and
get right back to you!”
I hung up and grinned.
Go for it, girl. Let’s see you get locked in a
freezer!
Sure enough, two hours later, Lisa started
blowing up my phone.
I watched the phone ring and ignored it.
Finally, she sent me a text: “Carol, help! I’m
locked in the freezer!”
I knew it.
Mark’s goons had “accidentally” locked the
door, thinking she was me.
Hang in there, sweetie. Someone will let you
く
out eventually.
I checked Mark’s location on my phone.
I’d insisted on tracking his location on my
phone for safety.
I hadn’t used it much.
He’d probably forgotten all about it.
The little blue dot was moving fast.
It was sitting at the Night Owl Motel.
That was close to where Mark supposedly
died in the car crash.
That’s exactly where I was headed.
I grabbed my phone and called a cab.
I was going to stake out that intersection and
see what kind of drama they were planning.
