Chapter 6
I exit the post and message him: [Divorce papers are at the hospital. Had your colleague take them. Sign them when you get back.]
He sends a voice message right back.
hit play and hear his irritated voice: “I’m on fucking vacation and still can’t escape you? Is this all because I didn’t hold your hand for some hospital paperwork? How
long are you going to drag this out? Did you have to tell my colleagues? Aren’t you embarrassed enough?”
“You’re the one who begged for this baby. What kind of woman picks fights over jealousy when she’s about to give birth? Can’t think about yourself or the baby?
How the hell can someone this selfish be a mother?”
His accusations stun me. Before I can respond, I hear Ray’s playful voice:
“Marcus, look at this beautiful shell! Can we keep it? Thank you for making time to
take me to the beach even though you’re so busy. This one’s for you!”
She gets closer, her voice dropping nervously: “Was that Sarah calling?” Maybe he’s afraid she’ll overhear something, or maybe he just doesn’t want me
intruding on their private little world. He hangs up without a word.
His constant coldness leaves me empty. I close the call and go back to his post.
The nurse comes in to check on me, notices the photo.
“Oh, you have Dr. Bennett’s contact? He’s so dedicated to his patients. Most
doctors won’t give out private numbers these days. I heard he hasn’t taken vacation in years – now he’s finally taking some real time off!”
Right. We didn’t even have a real wedding. Just a quick trip to the courthouse
between his surgeries. No ceremony, no reception, no honeymoon.
He wouldn’t even take a full day off – rushed right back to the hospital after signing
the papers.
No wonder none of his colleagues know me, or even know he’s married.
Looking back, maybe this ending was written from the start.
I try to message him on Instagram about the papers again. “User not found” pops up – he’s blocked me there too. Fine. Fuck him.
