When I came out, Ashley was gone.
Mark was there, drinking.
He looked up.
The light hid his face.
“Jenny, where were you today?”
“It’s none of your business.”
I didn’t want to talk. Mark slammed the glass.
He came over.
“Don’t act innocent. I know you were hooking
up with some pretty boy.”
“Jenny, are you that horny? You want me
because I haven’t been around? I will turn you
on!”
He ripped my dress, grabbing me and
dragging me to the bed.
I pulled away. “Mark, what’s wrong with you? I
just gave birth!”
Г
He couldn’t hear anything, biting me on the
shoulder.
I pushed him off, slapped him.
Mark grabbed a glass and hit me.
Blood ran down my face.
He stopped and grabbed me.
“Why didn’t you move?”
I tried to say something.
Then, I collapsed.
I woke up to Mark and the old man arguing.

I was back at the hospital.
Mark looked relieved.
He glared at the old man.
“She just came back from a date.”
The old man was shaking.
“What date? You know what Jenny was doing
yesterday?”
“Grandpa.”
I stopped him.
“It’s in the past.
The old man knew what I meant and didn’t
Г
He looked at Mark.
Mark rolled his eyes.
“She’s awake. I have to go. Ashley’s waiting.
I’ll be back to visit her again.”
The old man swung his cane, yelling,
“Animal!”
“I don’t care where you go, but you have to
see Jenny at the old house…”
Mark left.
The old man sighed, grabbing the divorce
papers.
“Jenny, I didn’t raise my kids well.”
“I hope you send him off to God, just don’t
hold a grudge against him, ok?”
I looked at him and agreed.
The next morning, I showed up dressed in
black.
