- SU. ANU LIE WORKιudu was even more su.
My classmates were all elites from various states, none of them wasting their lives or idling away their time.
Every single one of them was a master of
self–improvement!
Once they entered study mode, they wouldn’t dare to slack off day or night, afraid of falling
behind.
When I first told my high school friends, they felt sorry for me, thinking I was working too
hard. But I felt incredibly fulfilled.
Occasionally, friends would mention that Willow, with my parents‘ help, got into a community college in the same city as Josh
and was constantly pestering him.
Recently, Willow and Josh got together, but
Josh wasn’t good to her, often flirting with
others. Yet she remained devoted.
The dorm leader commented:

“Like she’s been bewitched.
But I understood.

Willow had always been vain and competitive. After I got into Stanford, and she only got into community college, she wanted to one- up me, to suppress me in some way, so she
chose the relationship route.
And Josh was the most outstanding guy she knew, so she wasn’t willing to let him go. My parents seemed to have given up on Willow and were trying to reconnect with me.
They sent me living expenses and tuition.
I rejected it all.
They insisted.
So, I forwarded it to Willow.
Occasionally, Mom would call to ask about
my situation. I answered every question, polite
but distant.
After a few words, I would find an excuse to
hang up.

Until one time, when I hung up on her again, I
completely enraged her—
“Can’t you even have a proper conversation
with your mother?”
