- 11.
Mark doesn’t say anything.
I say, “I lost my memory. Was it my fault? Did
I not want to take care of it?”
く
Mark clenches his fists.
He looks lost.
He stares at me. “Sarah, I’m sorry. It was my
fault for losing my memory. I didn’t take care
of things. I won’t do it again.
وو
I say, “Losing your memory is no excuse for
not taking care of a cat.”
I look away from him.
I say, “It’s my cat. I’m taking it.
Mark looks happy. “Sarah, I knew you
wouldn’t leave it behind…
99
I say, “Draw up a contract. You can’t take the
L
cat from me.”
Mark stops smiling.
He says, “Sarah, why are you being so cold to
me?”
I say, “You’re worse than a stranger.”
Mark is quiet. His eyes fill with darkness.
Mark looks worse every day.
On the last day, the sunset is beautiful.
We walk to the lavender field.
Everything looks familiar.
It looks like the wedding a month ago.
But there aren’t any guests, and there’s no
bride.
We stand in the lavender field.
The wind blows my hair, and the lavender
shakes.
Mark stares at me.
He kneels down in front of me.
He holds out a wedding ring.
I wore that ring two months ago.
But he put it on Ashley’s finger.
He says, “Sarah, we planned our wedding
here in this lavender field. I was going to take
く
your hand and we would get married in front
of everyone.
99
He looks at me. “Sarah, will you marry me?”
I laugh and slap him.
I say, “Do you think I’m Ashley? Do I want
your second–hand crap?”
He’s surprised, and his face turns red.
I turn to leave.
He hurries after me.
I stop and say, “Enough. It’s the last day.
Don’t bother me again.”
He grabs my wrist.
く
He looks desperate. “Can we go somewhere
else, please?”
I try to pull away.
He doesn’t let go. “Please.”
I say, “Fine.”
The car stops in front of a house.
He says, “Sarah, remember? This is our
home.”
