The next morning, Jake went to work.
I was still dead asleep. I’d barely gotten any
sleep the night before and couldn’t keep my
eyes open.
“Bye, honey, I’m off to work.”
I mumbled something, feeling a kiss on my
forehead.
I woke up hours later, and you won’t believe it
– I saw Liam’s “going home” drama on TV.
Liam was sulking the whole time.
But the reporter said, “As you can see from
Mr. Callahan’s face, he’s deeply moved by
this homecoming.”
Hilarious! The trust fund kid was clearly out
of his element.
His parents‘ place was a small, self–built
farmhouse, surrounded by even smaller
buildings.
There were a dozen chickens running around
in the yard.
Liam, who’d probably never seen a place like
this in his life, looked disgusted. His designer
clothes stood out against the backdrop.
“Stop filming,” he mumbled at the camera.
His dad said, “Are you crazy? We’re getting
paid for this!”
The camera panned to Maisie, who was
smiling so hard it looked painful. Liam’s mom.
grabbed her hand.
“This is my son’s girlfriend. She’s beautiful
and doesn’t care that we’re poor. She’s a
good girl.”
Liam said, “Maisie doesn’t care about that
stuff, but I have my own house, car, and
savings. I’d never let her suffer.”
Maisie perked up.
“I like him, it doesn’t matter what his family
has.”
The narrator then said that Liam was “young
and successful” and that Maisie was a “rare
and unmaterialistic girl.”
My mother–in–law and I burst out laughing.
Liam’s car, house, and credit cards were all
gifts from the Callahans.
He thought he was still a big shot, but my in-
laws had taken back the house, the car, the
cards, and the company they’d let Liam
manage. The only thing he still had was the
Lamborghini he was driving.
My mother–in–law was relieved.
“Thank God he’s not my son! I would have
kicked him out ages ago! After all the time
and money we wasted on him, he turned out
to be a complete loser.”
