- 15.
I’d spent the afternoon shopping with my
girlfriends. I was driving past Jake’s office, so
I called up the driver and told him to pick up
Jake from work.
Then I saw Maisie standing by the entrance to
the building.
She was holding something and looked like
she was waiting for someone.
I sat in the car, watching the show.
<
Soon, Jake came out, followed by his
assistant.
Maisie quickly smoothed her hair, adjusted
her expression, and walked up beside him.
“Mr. Callahan, can I have a minute?”
She pulled out a lunchbox, and it was pink,
like for a little girl.
“I made this myself. I hope you can forgive
me and Liam for acting like fools at your
wedding. No pressure.
A bunch of employees were coming out for
lunch, and Maisie’s actions drew their
attention.
Bringing someone lunch implied something
<
more than just friendship.
Jake didn’t even look at her. “No, thanks.”
His assistant blocked her. “Ma’am, please
respect yourself. Our CEO is having lunch
with his wife. Don’t do something that can be
misunderstood.”
The people around us started whispering.
“Why are you making it sound like I’m stalking
him? That’s not what I meant at all.”
Maisie thought that if she played the victim,
everyone would take her side. But it didn’t
work on Jake.
I slowly got out of the car and said, “Honey.”
<
All eyes were on me.
“That’s the CEO’s wife! She’s gorgeous!”
“They’re a perfect couple.”
Jake naturally held out his hand to me, and a smile spread across his face. It was nothing like the ice–cold stare he’d given Maisie.
Maisie ran off.
She was in such a hurry that she didn’t see
the delivery guy. She crashed into him, and he
spilled her food all over the ground.
Two slices of bacon cut into giant hearts,
plus a little card with her number on it.
It was so obvious.
<
Someone laughed. “Help, heart–shaped
bacon? Did LeAnn Rimes give her the courage to do that?” (changed the reference
to a more localized celebrity).
Maisie blew up at the delivery guy. “Why can’t
you watch where you’re going?”
“Hey, lady, I was minding my own business
when you ran into me!”
I looped my arm through Jake’s and walked
away.
I was sick of watching the show. She hadn’t
learned a thing.
