- 18.
Their drama was just entertainment. The most
important thing was to enjoy life with my
husband.
We walked hand–in–hand on the beach at
night.
The ocean began to churn. We were doing something new every day. Getting married. first, then falling in love, wasn’t so bad.
It started raining.
We kept walking.
The rain got heavier, so we went back to the
hotel. Jake pulled me into the shower and
I suddenly remembered when I was in college.
I’d visited a friend at another school and
walked past the basketball court.
It was raining, but there were still some guys
playing. I saw Jake.
His white T–shirt was soaked, clinging to his
body like it was see–through. You could see
his abs.
I stopped dead in my tracks.
The rain stopped, and the guys took off their
shirts.
Jake took off his shirt, revealing his slim
body. He wrung out the water and put it back
- on.
He turned around and looked right at me.
His young eyes were clear and calm, but
when he saw me, his cheeks turned red, and
he looked away.
“Hey, Mr. Smart Guy, nice body!” I teased
him.
He just walked away.
“Come here. I’m going to dry your hair.”
I came back to reality, walked over to him,
and let him do his thing.
He’d blow–dried my hair a couple of times
before, and he was getting better at it.
“Hey,” I said, wrapping my arms around his
neck and breathing in his scent.
“Do you have a crush on me back in college?
You turned red when you saw me.”
Jake grinned. “I never turned red.”
I told him what happened, and he
remembered.
He smiled, his eyes full of the moon.
“Should I ask you why you’re looking at my
abs?”
“No way.”
He kissed my ear. “Really?”
I gave in. “Okay, I was.”
As I drifted off to sleep, I heard him whisper,
“I liked you. But I never thought I could be
with you.”
“But now I have you. Mrs. Callahan.”
–His life had made him guarded. He was
meeting the girl of his dreams, but he knew she was out of his league. He needed to
make something of himself first.
He liked her, but he never dared to think he
could have her.
But he still wanted her to remember his name.
So he joined the debate team, even though it
didn’t make him any money.
Now she was here.
She was his wife.
He loved her.
