The next morning, I headed to the SATS early.
Amy’s parents stopped me, asking anxiously, “Have you seen Amy? She’s not in her room!”
I paused, knowing that Amy had really gone to spend the night with Jake.
She’d thrown away the most important day of
her life.
For a loser.
I was calm. I just shook my head and said
“no,” then kept walking to the test.
From that moment on, our lives would be
completely different.
<
I was going to Harvard, soaring, decorating
my life with success.
And Amy…
Who knew?
Who cared?
After the test, I let out a sigh of relief.
I aced it!
I was sure I’d get into Harvard.
My parents were thrilled. They bought a ton
of food and threw a party.
At the party, I saw Amy.
く
She was sitting in the corner, glued to her
phone, smiling.
I heard that she’d gone to work with Jake in a beach town.
“Work.” All they did was eat, drink, and party, and then ask her parents for money.
Eventually, her parents talked her into coming
home.
The scores were coming out, and she had to
see them.
I got into Harvard, becoming the first student
from my school to get in for five years.
My parents were ecstatic and threw a party
for me
く
At the party, I saw Amy.
She was in a corner, staring at her phone.
Chapter Two
It was clear she was head over heels for Jake.
Amy’s mom saw me and nudged Amy.
“Honey, Tom’s here!”
Amy looked up, our eyes met.
I gave a polite nod.
She pouted. “Congrats, I guess. You really
made something of yourself with all that
studying.”
<
Amy’s mom smacked her arm. “What’s that
attitude? Tom got into Harvard! What about
you? Just some two–bit community college.
What are you so proud of?”
“Big deal, Harvard! I don’t like people who do
nothing but study. They’re boring!” Amy
shouted loudly.
She was still mad at me.
Because I wouldn’t forgive her.
It was laughable.
Like it was somehow my fault.
