Claire and I were inseparable.
We both had big plans. In our free time, we
decided to start our own business.
Claire thought e–commerce was a good idea,
since her uncle was in that business.
So we went into e–commerce

So we went into e–commerce.
For two years.
We did well, making almost a million dollars a
year.
I told my professor, and he said, “That’s
good, but a lot of my students are already making that much. You need to aim higher.”
That motivated me. Claire and I decided to go
big.
After graduation, we were making two million
dollars a year.
Claire decided to get her Ph.D.
She wanted something to fall back
She wanted something to fall back on.
“Business is stable, and you can handle it on your own. I’ll get my Ph.D. and then get a job in government. That way, we’ll always be
okay.”
I glared at her. “You just want to be in politics, don’t you? It’s easy.”
She giggled. “Politics is great. You keep
making money, and I’ll help businesses come
to the state. It’s perfect!”
That was her plan.
So, I left school and went into the business
world.

Claire kept studying.
During that time, we found out we were going
to have a baby.
I was shocked.
I asked Claire, “What do you want to do?”
She glared at me. “What do you mean? You
want me to get rid of it? Not a chance!”
She wanted the baby.
That wasn’t weird for Ph.D. students.
Having a baby while studying was normal.
I hugged her, nodding.
We were going to have a baby.
