Mom was always cool, no matter what
happened.
Even if she was responsible for someone’s
death.
Now she looked scared.
“What’s going on?” I asked. “Why are we
running?”
“I don’t have time to explain,” she said. “If you
don’t want to die, just run. Keep going and
don’t look back!”
It was like she was trying to protect me.
I didn’t know what to do.
She slammed the door.
I started running through the dark tunnel.
I walked for a long time, but I still didn’t have
any service.

I started to wonder what was going on.
Why was Mom acting like this?
Why did she have a secret tunnel?
I reached a door.
I was in a field outside town.
I listened to Mom and kept running.
Even though I was still mad at her, she was
trying to help me.
I couldn’t leave her.
And maybe whatever was happening had
something to do with Dad and Mark.

The streets were empty.
There was nobody at the corner store.
The whole place was silent.
I ran to my house.
Mom was lying on the ground in a pool of
