The Disappeared Wife
Chapter 1
When I heard Jason was trapped in a burning
haunted house, I didn’t hesitate.
I ran straight in to save him.
But I couldn’t find him anywhere.
The fire scorched my arm, and the smoke got
to me, knocking me out cold.
When I finally woke up, the first thing I heard
was a bunch of people laughing.
“OMG, that’s hilarious! I can’t believe Sarah
fell for it again.”
く
My eyes fluttered open, and I saw Jason
sitting there looking like a million bucks.
He was all cozy with Brittany, his high school
sweetheart, feeding her grapes.
He sure didn’t look like he’d been anywhere
near a fire.
“Jason, we’ve totally pranked Sarah, like, a
hundred times now.
Remember when we told her you were
kidnapped, and she broke her leg trying to
rescue you?
Or when we said you were poisoned, and she
went searching for some rare herb in the
backwoods?”
“This time, we told her you were trapped in a
burning building, and she risked her life! Talk
about a sucker for love.”
“Yeah, well, all that love is wasted. Jason’s
just playing her. It’ll never go anywhere.”
Jason stood up, giving me a cold stare.
He said, “She cheated back in high school,
messed with Brittany’s car, so she lost the
race and everyone made fun of her. Now, it’s
payback time. Don’t stop. Let’s keep this
going.”
Hearing the cruel words of the man I loved, I
just lay there in shock.
It felt like I’d been plunged into an icy lake; so
L
cold it hurt to breathe.
I finally understood those melodramatic
romance movies, the love and hate, the
tearing each other apart.
Jason stood over me, looking down with a
sneer.
His eyes treated me like trash.
My heart twisted, and I clenched my fists, but
I couldn’t bring myself to confront him.
So, all this time, he was just using me for
revenge?
That’s when it hit me why Jason, this rich,
aloof, and popular guy, had been chasing
after a regular race car driver like me for
く
I finally fell for him, and that’s when he sprung
his trap, stomping all over my feelings.
Thinking back, I felt pathetic, like I’d been
living in a bubble, playing the fool, running to
his rescue while he watched and laughed.
He said I’d sabotaged Brittany’s car, which
was a total lie!
Jason put himself through this for years, just
for her!
I couldn’t help it; tears streamed down my
face as I listened to their taunts.
“Brittany, you feel better now?”
Jason cupped Brittany’s face, gently stroking
her skin.
<
“Yeah! Much better. I just feel bad that you
had to slum it with Sarah all this time.”
“Don’t worry, I never slept with her. I’m all
yours!”
Brittany’s eyes lit up, and she hugged Jason
tight.
They spun around in a circle.
“Really?”
“Yeah, a nobody like her doesn’t deserve me.
I wouldn’t touch her!”
Then, ignoring everyone, they kissed and
hugged like crazy.
く
Then, ignoring everyone, they kissed and
hugged like crazy.
Everyone else knew to leave, quietly closing
the door behind them.
I gripped the bedsheets, feeling disgusted, as
the sounds of their actions burned into my
ears.
I just stayed there numb, like a puppet
without a soul, sinking into the abyss.
They went on forever, torturing me with every
second, as I struggled to break free.
When they were finally done, they left
together.
I don’t know where they went.
<
I dragged myself out of bed, my arm
throbbing from the burn, and gave a bitter
smile.
As a race car driver, my hands and feet are
everything, and I almost lost a leg and now an
arm, all trying to save Jason.
How ridiculous.
Covered in burns, I bolted from the hospital,
not stopping until I collapsed on the ground,
sobbing uncontrollably.
Just then, my cell rang. It was my coach.
“Sarah, have you made up your mind? I’m still
waiting to hear back. You’ve got so much
talent, you shouldn’t give it up! If you agree,
く
we can leave to Europe for training. They
have the best resources there!”
I used to care about Jason, and he didn’t
want me racing, said it was too risky.
He said he’d be devastated if anything
happened to me.
I actually believed that crap.
Turns out, he wasn’t worried about my safety,
he was afraid I’d come back to racing and
steal Brittany’s spotlight.
I swallowed my feelings, trying not to let my
coach know how messed up I was.
“Coach, I’m in!”
く
“But first, I need to fix my foot and hand!”
“You really mean it? Hahaha! It’s fine, no
problem.”
“I heard there’s some miracle worker over
there who can fix your leg. So it’s settled, I’ll
pick you up in three days.”
I gripped my phone, knuckles turning white,
my voice filled with conviction.
“Okay, I won’t let you down!”
My coach laughed excitedly, before his voice
turned serious.
“You’re not backing out for Jason again, are
you? He definitely doesn’t want you to leave.”
く
“He doesn’t matter. If I want to leave, he can’t
stop me. I want to focus on my career.
Nothing else matters.”
“Really?”
“Yep!”
After a bit of small talk with my coach, I hung
- up.
The cold wind cut right through me.
As I stood up, Jason called.
Before, I’d answer as soon as his name
flashed on the screen, but now, it just
sounded like nails on a chalkboard.
