Chapter 3
When I woke up, it had been two days.
I heard Jason throwing a cup against the wall,
shattering it to pieces.
“Why would you inject that toxic liquid into
く
her without asking me? If she dies, I’m
coming after you!”
“Why are you so worked up, Jason? Wouldn’t
it be better if she died? Then no one could
steal Brittany’s spotlight, and you two would
get back together.”
His friend said casually, like a life meant
nothing to them.
“Or, have you fallen in love with Sarah?”
Jason was silent, and the room was still and
cold, like the air had frozen solid.
“That’s impossible. I love Brittany. I was just
feeling bad for her.”
Jason’s hands tightened into fists, not
<
knowing why he suddenly felt panicked.
He felt himself in a constant battle. His
friends sighed with relief.
“I knew it. You wouldn’t be mad at us for
her.”
“Alright, we should head out.”
When Jason’s friends left, the room was silent
again.
Jason sat down next to me, muttering,
“Love?”
“No, impossible!”
He ran his hands through his hair in
frustration. I was getting out of here
tomorrow, so he had to get up.
As I came too, Jason didn’t know why he felt
happy as he sat down once more.
“Sarah, you’re awake.”
“But your leg isn’t healed yet, sorry, I let you
down.”
Jason looked down, feeling guilty, but I just
stared at him, not offering any comfort.
My leg wasn’t badly injured before, but Jason
had dragged it out, causing long–term
damage.
“It’s alright, I already knew, not your fault.”
I should blame myself for being so blind.
L
Jason acted as if he was reassured and
hugged me, wiping his fake tears.
He was taking me home.
When I got home, I went to grab my clothes
to take a shower, I heard Jason talking to his
friends in the bathroom.
“Jason, prank her one last time!”
“Isn’t it her birthday tomorrow? We can
pretend you drowned, have her jump in to
save you, let her swallow a bunch of
seawater. It’s not that bad of a punishment!”
“No, Sarah just learned how to swim, I don’t
want her to actually drown.”
“Jason, Brittany was mad that you threw a
cup in the hospital for Sarah. I don’t know
where she went, but she seems heartbroken.”
“If Sarah didn’t cheat back in high school,
Brittany wouldn’t have lost. She would never
had to deal with the hate from the fans, which
is worse than death.”
His friend’s words made Jason determined.
“Alright, this is the last time.”
“Keep an eye on her, don’t let anything
happen.
I ran, terrified. I got out to the balcony and
clutched the rails, feeling like my heart was
bleeding.
If Liumped into the sea to save him I’d be the
く
If I jumped into the sea to save him, I’d be the
one who died.
If that was the case, I would make Jason live
with guilt forever.
Jason walked over, putting his arms around
me and told me that we would be going to
the beach to celebrate my birthday.
I didn’t say anything, just said my last
goodbye, took out my phone, and told my
coach everything.
The next day came quickly. Jason took me to
the beach, and his friends were already
setting up a BBQ and listening to music.
Brittany was there too, and when Jason saw
く
her, his eyes lit up. He walked over to talk to
her, leaving me by the sea.
When I turned around, Jason was gone.
“Oh no! Jason was just breaking open an
oyster, but he slipped into the sea! We have
to save him!”
Everyone looked at me, waiting for me to
jump in.
I smiled, and as I jumped in, I heard them
laughing behind me.
I swam over to the other side of the beach.
I got on shore and went over to a car that
was waiting for me.
“Jason, I hope my “death” can make you feel
guilt for the rest of your life. I wasted so
many years with you. Now, I am going to play
you too. We’re even.”
On the other side of the beach, Jason had an
uneasy feeling.
He’d been waiting for a while, but he couldn’t
see me come up to the surface.
“Hurry up! Put on the equipment and get
Sarah out of the sea! Now!”
“If anything happens to her, you are done
for!”
Chapter 2
Jason’s friends, seeing him so angry, jumped
into the ocean one after another.
But after searching for what felt like forever,
they still couldn’t find Sarah.
Panic started to set in.
When they finally got back to shore, Jason
ran over, shouting, “Where is she?”
“We… we couldn’t find her.”
“Couldn’t find her?” Jason’s eyes widened in
shock and fear.
“What the hell did you come back up for? Get
back out there and find her! I swear, if you
く
don’t, I’ll kill you myself.”
Jason didn’t know what was happening to
him, but when he heard Sarah was missing,
his heart started pounding like crazy.
He kept telling himself he didn’t love her, but
maybe he’d fallen for her a long time ago
without even realizing it.
Fear was driving him to the edge. Without
thinking, Jason dove back into the water.
All that mattered was finding Sarah.
If he didn’t, he’d regret it for the rest of his
life!
Jason searched frantically, coming up for air
when he was about to pass out.
<
After dozens of tries, he was exhausted and
almost got swept away by a wave.
He started punching the water in anger, as
his friends dragged him back to shore.
“Jason, stop looking! The waves probably
took her.”
“If you jump back in, you’re gonna get swept
away too.”
“We’ve already called 911. The Coast Guard’s
on their way.”
Jason stared at his friends, his eyes
bloodshot, like a demon straight from hell.
He grabbed one of them by the throat,
squeezing hard.
“It’s all your fault! You’re the ones who told
me to make her jump in after me! Sarah loves.
me, she’d do anything for me!”
“If I don’t get her back, I’m going to ruin you
all!”
Soon, the Coast Guard arrived.
But after searching for hours, they still
couldn’t find Sarah.
“I’m sorry, Mr. Smith. Ms. Johnson may have
been swept out to sea. Trying to find.
someone out there is like finding a needle in a
haystack. We fear that there is very little hope
of survival.”
く
After the Coast Guard gave Jason the news,
he collapsed on the sand.
Tears mixed with seawater streamed down
his face.
His ears were ringing, and it felt like a bomb
had just exploded in his head.
Jason clutched his heart, gasping for air, the
pain almost unbearable.
He thought about Sarah jumping into the
ocean to save him, and it hurt even more.
He wasn’t even in the water. That idiot would
have died for him. What had he done? He’d
lost something important, something he could
never get back. Jason finally broke down and
cried. He remembered everything.
He remembered when he first met Sarah,
before she even raced against Brittany.
His family had invested in Sarah’s company,
and he was sent to check things out.
Jason was speeding down the track when a
red race car flew past him on the left.
Jason was intrigued, and he floored it, trying
to catch up.
It was like they could read each other’s
minds, chasing each other, having the time of
their lives.
As the sun set, Jason pulled over, wanting to
see who had beaten him and made him feel
so alive.
L
When Sarah stepped out of the car, the
sunset was shining on her face, making her
look gorgeous.
Jason froze. He was speechless, so when
Sarah asked him, he couldn’t even respond.
Remembering it now, Jason almost passed
out from the pain.
He thought he was the hunter, and Sarah was
his prey, but he’d been caught in a trap he
couldn’t escape.
He woke up the next day to muffled voices
outside his room.
“Did you hear, Brittany? Sarah’s finally dead.
They can’t even find her body.”
“She found out that we messed with her race
car, which is why the organizer made us
switch cars, so you lost the race. Fortunately,
nobody knows the truth now.”
“Yeah, well, she had it coming. If Jason
wasn’t always checking her out, I wouldn’t
have said Jason still likes her. Now, that’s
karma. I don’t want anybody else to try and
take what’s mine. Or else there will be serious
consequences.”
“Keep your voice down. Jason might hear us.”
“He’s passed out. He won’t hear anything.”
Jason heard Brittany’s plan, his heart sank,
and he lost all his strength.
Г
He couldn’t believe he’d been hurting Sarah
for so long, and she was innocent all along.
It was like a knife to the chest, and he
clutched his heart.
He’d driven the woman he loved to her death.
Jason burst into tears, his chest heaving.
Brittany and her friend heard the noise and
froze, losing their smug attitude.
Then, they pushed the door open and saw
Jason slumped on the floor. Brittany started
to panic.
She was afraid Jason had heard them talking
and would know everything.
L
“Jason, why are you sitting on the floor?”
Brittany faked concern, helping Jason up.
“Come on! Sarah’s death was her own fault.
She barely knew how to swim, and she
jumped in anyway.”
Then, Brittany looked into Jason’s eyes and
felt a wave of fear.
He’d never looked at her like that before.
His eyes were empty of love, like she was his
enemy.
“Jason, why are you looking at me like that? I
didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Good, because now we should talk about the
wedding! My parents are pushing me, and I
don’t want to wait any longer…”
Before Brittany could finish, Jason slapped
her across the face.
Her friend was stunned, she never thought
Jason would hit her.
“You framed Sarah, made me blame her,
torture her, and killed her!”
“And you’re still talking trash about her!”
Jason yelled.
“Jason, don’t tell me, you actually fell in love
with Sarah?”
“What about me? What am I supposed to
do?”
Г
“We’ve known each other forever! Everything
was perfect until Sarah showed up! We
wouldn’t be in this mess, and I wouldn’t have
lost the race! I was supposed to be the
winner!”
“Shut up!”
Jason slapped her again. “You’re the one
who’s trash. You cheated, you’re a bad
person. I was tricked by you, and that’s why I
killed Sarah.”
“You’re going to prison! And so are your loser
friends!”
Jason kicked Brittany, sealing her fate.
