“Alright, alright. Whatever you want.”
My mom shook her head.
“Okay, sweetie.”
I watched.
Jenny was always their favorite.
I was just a nobody.
The guests sat back down, staring.
Sam’s parents were at the head table, looking
unhappy.
His mom whispered to his dad.
“What good is a daughter like that? She can’t
even handle a party. It’s embarrassing.”
I stood there smiling while they talked about
- me.
<
I wasn’t staying, so it didn’t matter.
After the party, I walked Sam’s parents to
their car.
His mom gave me a look.
“Riley, maybe you and Sam should call it off.
Maybe Jenny’s a better fit.”
I nodded.
“You’re right. Jenny and Sam are perfect for
each other.”
His dad smiled.
“Riley, that’s very mature of you. We’ll
remember this.”
く
I didn’t say anything.
I watched them leave and turned to go home.
A black Maybach pulled up in front of me.
Sam got out, looking angry.
He grabbed my wrist.
“Riley, what are you up to?”
I tried to pull away.
I stared at him.
“What’s wrong? I’m just letting you be with
Jenny. Aren’t you happy?”
We nowced
<
He paused.
“Why…?”
Before he could finish, Jenny ran up to us,
crying.
She saw Sam holding my wrist and burst into
tears.
“Sam! How could you?”
She ran off.
Sam let go of me and ran after her.
He didn’t even look back.
I rubbed my wrist and smiled.
L
Sam always wanted Jenny.
That night, I started packing.
If my family didn’t want me, I wasn’t staying.
I was halfway done when the door flew open.
Alex stormed in.
“Riley, Jenny’s sick! She passed out!”
I looked up at him.
“So? How is that my problem?”
“If you hadn’t been flirting with Sam, Jenny
wouldn’t have gotten so upset!”
He was furious.
“The doctors say her liver is failing. She
needs a transplant. And you’re the only
match.”
I stared at him.
“So, you want me to give her my liver?”
He didn’t say anything, but I knew.
I stood up.
“Why do you think I’d say yes?”
He stepped closer.
“Don’t make me do this, Riley. She’s our
sister. You can’t let her die.”
く
I backed away, feeling cold.
My parents came in.
“Mom, Dad, is that what you want too?”
My mom looked down.
“Riley, we love you both. Jenny’s our daughter
too. Please, save her.”
“The doctors said most people’s livers grow
back. You’ll be fine.”
I laughed.
“What if I’m one of the few who don’t? What
if I die? Would you even care?”
My dad sighed.
“Riley, don’t be selfish. This is for Jenny, for
the family.”
I closed my eyes and cried.
Alex grabbed a syringe and stuck it in my
arm.
I felt cold and dizzy.
Then, I blacked out.
I woke up in a hospital room.
The sun was shining through the window.
Sam was sleeping in a chair next to my bed.
He looked good, but I felt sick.
Г
He opened his eyes.
“Riley, you’re awake.”
I didn’t say anything.
He kept talking.
“You saved Jenny. I’ll marry you, like we
planned. You’ll be my wife, but I’ll have to
marry Jenny. She is the love of my life.”
I laughed.
“Don’t bother. Just marry Jenny.”
He frowned and grabbed my hand.
“Riley, don’t say that. I know you care about
く
- me. But Jenny needs me, and I’ll be good to
you.”
I shuddered and pulled my hand away.
He knew.
He was like me, and was reliving what
happened.
I ́snapped. “Sam, I hate you. I never loved
you!”
He looked shocked.
