Annabelle and Cindy did the interview.
Two days later, a reporter came to the
hospital.
But they were too hurt to sit up.
The reporter pointed the camera at them.
“How did Dad save you in the fire?”
Annabelle looked at Dad, and her eyes
softened.
“The fire was so big, Cindy and I couldn’t
escape.
He found us.
Dad’s leg broke, because a beam fell when he
was saving us. He got us out
We’re alive, but his leg’s broken. Dad is a
hero.”
She glanced at Dad.
He was glowing.
I just smiled.
The reporter complimented them, then turned
to Dad.
“Mr. Smith, you’re famous. Everyone says
you’re a hero.
But a lot of people are saying the fire started
because of junk in the hallway. Is that true?
And, you’re a firefighter. Did you tell people
not to store junk?”
I smiled.
I’d leaked that online.
Dad’s smile faded.
“The fire is still under investigation. I don’t
want to answer.”
The reporter nodded and changed the
subject.
Mom and I looked at each other.
Someone had to deal with the fire’s
aftermath.
Not just us, but two families upstairs were
burned out.
