I asked “So Jake called the ambulance for
diarrhea?”
Sarah nodded blankly.
“Yeah, why else?”
“What did you think I was saying?”
I turned and ran to the front yard.
く
The dog was puking his guts out, shaking all
over.
Jake, still on the stretcher, was holding him
tight to keep him still.
He looked so worried.
Could I have gotten it wrong?
When I appeared, Jake looked surprised.
He just said to me, “Babe, Buster’s sick, I’m
taking him to the vet.”
“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of him.”
He knew I cared about Buster since that’s
how we met.
<
He knew to tell me this.
I watched him go.
The reporters were amazed.
“Mr. Sullivan really is perfect, he loves his
wife and his pets.”
“I’ve never seen him like this.”
“Mrs. Sullivan, if you wanted us to show how
much he cares about animals you didn’t need
to lie to us about him cheating.”
“Yeah, just tell us next time, that was a rare
side of him that made it worth it.”
The reporters left happily.
く
Sarah stared at me. “Anna, do you know
something else?”
“Why get me here for this?”
I looked at her and said, “I found an open.
bottle of lube in his dresser.”
Sarah looked shocked. “No wonder!”
“Then why not ask him about it, maybe it was
just a misunderstanding?”
I wanted to.
But last time, Jake killed me before I could
speak.
I was not risking that.
I said, “I’ve never used that with him, who else
would it be?”
Sarah nodded. “Yeah.”
“But if you keep spying you’ll never know
what’s happening.”
“Leave this to me, I know people, I can tell
you everything.”
Then she left.
I went back to the house.
Hours later, Jake came back with Buster.
The dog was getting better, but still sick.
Г
Jake took a shower and wanted to sleep with
- me.
I moved away.
Jake asked me, “Anna, you are acting weird.”
“Are you checking up on me?”
“Why else would you have Sarah and the
reporters outside?”
I paused.
Then Jake’s phone rang.
He stepped out of the room to answer.
Then he walked back in, looking nervous.
work needs mo
“Anna, work needs me.
“I’ll talk when I get back.”
Then he left.
That was weird.
)
Jake cared so much about work, but I was
always first.
He never left the room for phone calls.
What was so bad?
Then Sarah called.
“Anna, I found it, your husband bought a
house out of town!”
く
“He’s there now!”
