because of amnesia?
Suppressing the bitterness in my heart, I took
a deep breath and smiled slightly. “Sorry,
you’ve got the wrong girl.”
I held up the ring on my finger. “Also, I’m
already married.”
After a few seconds of silence, the room
erupted in laughter.
Jake raised an eyebrow dismissively.
“Married? To a garbage collector or a street
sweeper?”
“Evelyn, you don’t really think I’d be jealous of
such a lame excuse, do you? Are you out of
your mind?”
He grabbed my wrist and, before I could
react, tore the ring off my finger.
I winced in pain and was about to say
く
something when Ashley giggled. “Jake, isn’t
that the ‘Forever Love‘ ring that your uncle
bought for $200 million at an auction in
Europe five years ago?”
“Don’t tell me she’s going to say she married
Uncle John and became your aunt.”
Hearing this, everyone laughed even louder.
Everyone knew that the current head of the
Johnston family was Jake’s uncle, John
Johnston. Although he was only five years
older than Jake, he was a powerful figure that
inspired respect.
He was handsome, rich, and devoted to his
wife.
They had been married for five years, but no
one had ever seen his wife or daughter. He
kept them hidden so well.
“Don’t tell me you’re going to say that you’re
Uncle John’s wife that he’s kept hidden for
five years?”
Someone teased, holding up the ring. “I have
to say, this ring is a pretty good fake. It must
have cost a lot of money. Evelyn really put in
the effort to fool Jake.”
Faced with everyone’s doubts and ridicule, I
tried to explain. “I didn’t fake it. This ring is
real…”
Before I could finish, a slap landed hard on
my face. The burning pain instantly exploded
on my cheek.
“Are you out of your mind? You couldn’t pick
someone else to scam? Everyone knows
Uncle John loves his wife. Why would he want
a used woman like you that even I don’t
want? Do you not have a mirror to look at yourself? I hate women who lie to make
people jealous. I was blind to have ever liked
you. You’re pathetic!”
I covered my face and slowly turned around.
Perhaps my gaze was too calm, but Jake
<
suddenly looked guilty and turned away.
Ashley didn’t let me off the hook. “Jake was
willing to let you be his mistress even though
he lost his memory. You shouldn’t be
ungrateful and should’ve tried to harm him.
You know Uncle John loves his wife the most,
yet you dared to pretend to be Jake’s aunt.
Are you trying to bring bad luck to him?
You’re so selfish and vicious!”
Ashley was my stepfather’s daughter. On the
seventh day after my dad’s death,
I was forced by my mother to accept this little
sister who was a year younger than me.
She was like a ghost, unable to tolerate
anything good in my life.
She would take whatever she could take, and
destroy what she couldn’t.
Five years ago, Jake had stood in front of me
like a god, coldly scolding Ashley.
Now, the person in front of me was still the
く
same person.
But he was standing in front of Ashley,
throwing out a wad of money with a
disgusted look.
“You’re doing all this for money, aren’t you?
Pick it up.”
The sharp edges of the bills cut my forehead.
A few drops of blood trickled out, but I didn’t
wipe them away. I saw a hint of barely
noticeable concern in Jake’s eyes.
The next second, I bent down.
He immediately sighed with relief and laughed
mockingly. “That’s right. A simp has to act
like a simp…”
Among the red bills, I picked up the ring that
had been thrown into the corner.
Jake stared at me in disbelief, a sense of
panic inexplicably rising in his heart.
As I was about to leave, he suddenly grabbed
my hand. “Are you addicted to acting? Isn’t
<
this money enough to buy a fake ring?”
I didn’t understand why he was getting so
anxious. “Let go.”
He gritted his teeth and glared at me. “You
really won’t shed a tear until you see the
coffin. Fine. Ashley and I are getting married
in a week. Uncle John will be back in the
country that day. You should come to the
ceremony too and let my uncle see how
shameless you are.”
Hearing the word “wedding,” the joy on
Ashley’s face was impossible to hide. “Aren’t
you afraid of being exposed and won’t dare
to come?”
I carefully put the ring away and said
indifferently, “Okay, I’ll go. I hope you don’t
regret it.”
Walking out of the room, I stopped at the
door for a few minutes.
Jake’s friend sighed. “Jake, aren’t we taking
<
this too far? Something seems off about
Evelyn. Is she really married?”
“There’s no way. She’s just acting.” Jake’s
tone was certain. “She’s still that desperate.
One little gesture from me and she’ll come
crawling back.”
Thinking of the calm look in my eyes as I left,
he pursed his lips unnaturally. “I’m done
playing around too. After the wedding, I’ll
‘recover‘ my memory, complain to her, say |
love her the most, and she’ll be simping again
like a dog.”
