Chapter 9 The Purpose
He nodded confidently.
Maybe, in his mind, he thought he understood me perfectly.
After all, I used to tell him everything.
I was almost completely open with him.
Keith looked at me nervously.
After all, I had been with Stephen for six years. In that time, anyone would have gotten to know the other person well.
He thought Stephen would know me well.
But I knew, in those six years… Stephen never really understood anything about me.
I walked up to Stephen and softly asked, “When did my parents have the car accident?”
For a moment, Stephen was completely stunned.
He had probably thought of many possible questions, but he never expected this one.
In the awkward silence that followed, Keith blurted out.
The whole situation became even more uncomfortable.
Bonnie quickly said, “Kathryn, listen. We’re both women, and it’s important to choose someone you truly like. Everyone can see how much you’ve given to Stephen over the past six years. Can you really just end it like this?”
Her words seemed sincere.
I looked at her and asked, “He already put on such a show in my car with you. Do you think I would still care? My life would be pathetic if I did.”
I took the ring from Keith and slid it onto my finger.
At first, I thought he was just helping me get back at Stephen, and I worried that if the ring didn’t fit, Stephen and Bonnie would mock
- me.
I even adjusted it with my hand.
But to my surprise, it fit my finger perfectly.
I looked at Keith in shock.
He proudly puffed out his chest and smiled. “Didn’t expect that, huh?”
With that, he grabbed my hand, and we started to walk away.
We hadn’t gotten very far when we heard Stephen’s voice behind us.
Chapter 9 The Purpose
“Kathryn, if you don’t choose me, you’ll regret it!”
3/4
He said it firmly, just like he had every time I tried to break up with him over the past six years when he would ignore me and say those same words.
In the past, Stephen never cared when I said I wanted to break
- up.
Every time I mentioned it, he just calmly replied, “Think it over. I don’t mind either way.”
This time, I turned to him and smiled. “Regretting it has nothing to do with you, so mind your own business.”
Keith and I were about to leave the cemetery when they followed us again.
Stephen grabbed my hand, looking desperate, as if he was truly concerned for me, and said, “I didn’t want to tell you this, but today, it seems I have no choice.”
He took a deep breath and continued, “He is only after something from you. Think about it. After all these years, if he really loved you, why hasn’t he come looking for you?”
When I didn’t respond, he pointed at my head and said, “I’ve told you before. You’re not thinking clearly. The only reason he’s here now is because he wants to take advantage of you.”
After he finished, Bonnie quickly nodded in agreement.
Chapter 9 The Purpose
The way they were working together was so ridiculous.
They probably had no idea that I already knew exactly what their purpose was this time.
Earlier, I wasn’t sure, but now, I was almost certain.
