Chapter 9
I quickly took a step back, shaking my head.
“I just bumped into something by
accident.
وو
I wasn’t trying to hide it, but our
relationship hadn’t yet reached the point where I could be completely open with him.
Seeing him fall silent, I hurried to add, “Mr. Spencer, if you have any second thoughts, you can… back out.”
“Back out of what? Marrying you?”
“Yes…”
He chuckled softly, the sound warm and reassuring.
Chapter 9
With a playful tap of his finger on my forehead, he said, “Don’t worry, I’m a businessman. I value integrity.”
That was true.
He was a businessman, after all.
Every move he made was calculated and weighed carefully for its pros and cons.
There had to be a reason, a hidden purpose behind his sudden proposal.
It had been three months ago, on an ordinary night, when I received his unexpected call.
He had asked me seriously if I wanted to marry him.
I was utterly stunned.
In the background, I faintly heard someone

shout, “William, why are you making calls? Come back and drink!”
I had wondered if he was drunk.
Panicked, I replied, “Mr. Spencer, marriage isn’t a game. I can’t marry you.
“Avery, I’m not drunk.”
وو
“Sorry, Mr. Spencer, I… I have a boyfriend.”
“I’ll wait for you to break up.”
I hung up, speechless, my mind reeling from the audacity and sheer immorality of it all.
After that, I pushed the incident to the back of my mind until my birthday rolled around.
Stirred by the provocations of William and Amanda, I made the rash decision to dial his
number.
Chapter 9
And there he was, with that same unwavering, serious tone, giving me his reply.
The matte black Rolls–Royce glided effortlessly through the radiant sunset.
I sat in the seat farthest from Lucas, still too shy to meet his gaze.
As the car drove deeper into the bustling heart of the city, I finally summoned the courage to ask, “Where are we headed next?”
وو
“Here.”
He handed me the tablet he’d been focused
- on.
I took it and saw the engagement itinerary displayed on the screen.
Chapter 9
It didn’t make much sense to me.
He smiled slightly from the side and explained, “Since you arrived a bit late, we’ll simplify the styling. These are the jewelry and dresses I’ve preselected for you. Take a look, if they‘ re not to your liking, there’s still time to change.”
“Engagement?”
I looked up at him in surprise.
The fragmented golden light of the setting sun filtered through the trees and windows, casting a warm glow that made his already striking features appear even sharper and more mesmerizing.
His eyes, bathed in the soft light, shimmered brighter than ever, reflecting my image with

an almost magnetic intensity.
A flutter of something delicate blossomed in my chest.
I quickly lowered my head, murmuring, “Are we getting engaged today?”
“You don’t want to?”
His voice carried a hint of disappointment, a softness I hadn’t expected.
“I do,” I blurted out without thinking.
I had assumed I was here to seek his
protection, that the engagement would be something he would plan later.
I hadn’t expected him to schedule it for today.
I could only smile to myself… it was perfect.
Chapter 9
I liked this date more than I could put into words.
Lucas reached out, his hand gently ruffling my hair in a way that felt oddly comforting.
“Don’t be nervous. You always have the
no.”
right to say no.
I shook my head firmly. “No, I may not be a businessman, but I believe in integrity just as much.”
I handed the tablet back to him, offering a
small smile.
“Anything you arrange, I’m sure I’ll like.”
For a brief moment, Lucas seemed surprised. Then, his lips curled into a satisfied smile.
Chapter 9
“That’s the Avery I know, bright, cheerful,
and always so good at charming people.”
Bright, cheerful, and good at charming people?
Since when did I have such glowing traits?
I could only blink in surprise, wondering if he truly meant it or was simply being kind.
