Jennifer noticed that Sandy had bandages wrapped around her body and a knot of worry twisted in Jennifer’s stomach.
She thought, “Is she really injured? A broken rib? That seems a bit too convenient.”
The seriousness of the situation hit her hard.
Clearing her throat, Jennifer said, “I’m really sorry, Sandy, but if you hadn’t bumped into me on purpose, I wouldn’t have panicked, and the cane wouldn’t have accidentally landed on you.”
At this moment, playing innocent seemed like the best strategy.
It was a trick she’d picked up from Sarah over the years.
Sandy’s face turned red with fury. “You bitch! You did that on purpose!”
Mary quickly intervened, grabbing her daughter’s arm. If Sandy kept going, her argument would fall apart.
“Ms. Hargreaves, my daughter can be a bit thoughtless sometimes. She didn’t mean to bump into you; it was just a joke. But it’s hard to believe you caused her such serious injury–it must not just be a coincidence.”

Sandy roared, “With so many other places around, why did she have to throw her cane at me? It’s obvious she meant to hit me!”
Jennifer sighed internally, “Great, my first stay at Clark Manor, and I’m already in deep trouble!”
“Enough with the shouting so early in the morning!” Angelina’s voice cut through the tension as she appeared.
Sandy immediately burst into tears. “Grandma, my back hurts. so much! I couldn’t even sleep last night because of the pain!”
Angelina frowned. “How did you get hurt? You need to be more careful!”
Sandy didn’t expect Angelina to not know. She, nearly beside herself with anger, exclaimed.
“It’s because that bit… wicked woman over there deliberately hit me with her cane! I’ve got a fracture because of her! Are you really going to side with this outsider?”
Sandy was determined to make Jennifer pay for this.
Jennifer lowered her head, her voice soft. “Madam Clark, it’s really all my fault. Even if Sandy accidentally bumped into me, I shouldn’t have panicked and thrown my cane at her. If anyone’s to blame, it’s me.”
Sandy’s face turned crimson with rage. “Jennifer, stop playing innocent! This is all your fault, and now you’re just pretending to be the victim!”

Jennifer nodded earnestly. “You’re right, Sandy. It’s all my fault. I’ll cover all your medical expenses.”
Her sincerity was palpable.
“Who cares about your few bucks? Do you think the Clark family is short on cash?” Sandy scoffed.
With tears welling up in her eyes, Jennifer replied, “Sandy, as long as you can forgive me, I’ll do anything you ask.”
Sandy stomped her foot in frustration.
Angelina interjected, her tone firm, “Enough already! Have you had your fill of this drama? Sandy, you’re being a bit much. Your injury was an accident; why blame Jennifer? She’s your elder. Show some respect.”
Mary, feeling a surge of anger, added, “Indeed! Ms. Hargreaves is an elder, so it’s inappropriate for her to hold Sandy responsible. After all, Sandy has never faced anything this serious before, and it breaks my heart to see her like this.”
Angelina said, “If you’re hurt, you need to go to the hospital and get checked out. This was an accident, and you can’t blame Jennifer for it. If you’re looking for someone to hold accountable, maybe you should reflect on your own actions, Sandy. You shouldn’t be making jokes like that if it’s going to hurt you.”
Deep down, Angelina knew Sandy had done this on purpose.

Sandy’s face flushed with rage. “Grandma, you’re just being biased! It’s Jennifer who hurt me!”

Millie chimed in, adding fuel to the fire, “But at the end of the day, it was your immaturity that led to this mess. You shouldn’t have bumped into Jennifer like that. Young people can be so impulsive; it’s up to the adults to teach them better before things get out of hand. Or it’s not just a broken bone.”
Mary felt her blood boil, thinking, “Are they all ganging up on
me now?”
But she also realized that pushing the issue further would be pointless; Angelina was clearly siding with Jennifer.
She turned to Sandy, trying to keep her cool. “Let it go, Sandy. If your grandmother thinks you need to reflect, then maybe you should listen.”
“Reflect on what? This is all Jennifer’s fault! Why are you all blaming me? I’m the one who got hurt!” Sandy was fuming.
She had always been the favorite at home and had never faced such humiliation before.
To be bested by someone like Jennifer, whom she looked down upon, was a bitter pill to swallow.
In a fit of rage, Sandy grabbed the ashtray from the table and hurled it at Jennifer. “Now you can feel the pain I went through yesterday!”

Just as the ashtray was about to hit her, someone appeared in front of her.
Jennifer looked down, stunned to see Timothy in a wheelchair blocking the path of the flying object. Her heart raced.
