Chapter 229 Bitter Lesson for the Pretender

Jennifer played with the sparklers for a while before the strong smell of smoke wafted up from the basement.
Sarah, covered in ash, crouched in the corner, coughing so hard she couldn’t even form a full sentence.
“Jennifer is insane!”
Jennifer glanced at Sarah in the corner and said, “Having fun?”
Sarah was both scared and starving. She didn’t have the energy to argue with Jennifer anymore.
Tearfully, she looked at Daniel outside and said, “Daniel, are you just going to stand there and watch her mess with me like this?”
Daniel sighed and replied, “You brought this on yourself. You deliberately didn’t let Jennifer eat, and I’ve already confirmed it with the staff. How are you going to deny it now?”
“Daniel, I didn’t! The staff is lying,” Sarah protested.
Sarah couldn’t possibly admit it. James wouldn’t betray her, would he?
Damn it. If Asher were here, he’d definitely stop Jennifer.
Chapter 229 Bitter Lesson for the Pretender 2/6 Jennifer stood up, looking a little bored. “I’m hungry. Let’s cat. Is Asher still not back? Maybe he can take Sarah’s place in the basement.”
Daniel replied, “He’s probably still busy at the office. He likely won’t be back for dinner tonight.”
Jennifer turned back to look at Sarah in the basement and said, “Hear that? The person you’re waiting for isn’t coming.”
She knew Asher all too well.
Everything that happened in the Hargreaves Villa today probably hadn’t escaped his notice, but he chose to play deaf and dumb by not coming home.
Asher knew that if he showed up, he’d end up taking Sarah’s place in the basement.
As long as Sarah’s life wasn’t in danger, Asher wouldn’t intervene.
After Jennifer left, Sarah burst into tears, fuming.
Her body was covered in ash, and her nose was filled with the acrid smell of smoke.
She walked to the basement door and looked at James outside. “Call Asher for me. My phone’s out of battery.”
James hesitated before saying, “I already tried calling him
Chapter 229 Bitter Lesson for the Pretender 3/6 secretly, but he didn’t pick up.”
“Then let me out and say I passed out.”
‘Ms. Campbell, if Ms. Hargreaves finds out you’re faking, you’ll pay for it. You’ve already seen how short her temper is.”
James was genuinely conflicted.
After all, now that Jennifer was back in the Hargreaves family and had made her big entrance, things had settled down.
As long as Jennifer kept her head down and behaved, her position as the eldest daughter of the Hargreaves family was secure. James didn’t want to risk his job.
Sarah noticed James‘ shifting attitude, and unease crept into her heart.
That wretched Jennifer! Ever since she returned to the
Hargreaves family, everything had changed. Of course, being the biological daughter made all the difference.
While Jennifer was eating outside, she noticed James and asked calmly, “What did Sarah say to you?”
“Ms. Campbell wanted to contact Mr. Hargreaves, but he’s been busy with work and hasn’t answered his phone.”
Jennifer had already guessed as much.
She looked at James and said, “I’ll bring her food later. Without

my permission, no one is to give her anything, not even a phone charger.”
James nodded. “Understood.”
Daniel hesitated before saying, “Don’t take this too far. You don’t want something serious to happen.”
“I’m already bored with it.”
Jennifer had only been venting her frustrations and never intended to actually harm Sarah in the basement. She wasn’t that reckless.
After finishing her meal, Jennifer went back to her room without bringing any food for Sarah.
Let her stay hungry.
Lying in bed, Jennifer checked her phone. Other than messages from her colleagues at the studio, there had been no word from Timothy.
But there was a dinner tomorrow. Timothy would probably show up.
While staring blankly at her phone, Jennifer suddenly received a message. She opened it quickly and saw it was from Jason.
[Are you okay? I heard you haven’t been to the studio.]
[How did you know?]

[I stopped by the studio today to check on you. That’s all.]

Jennifer frowned as she replied: [I’m fine, but until this matter is resolved, we shouldn’t meet. Don’t come to the studio either.]
She suddenly felt that Jason’s actions were becoming a nuisance.
That’s when she remembered–there hadn’t been any official clarification from the media about the rumors they’d fabricated about her and Jason.
What’s going on?
Jennifer called the media company directly, but no one answered. Damn it. Did they really think she wouldn’t expose their dirt?
Jennifer sent an email straight to the person in charge. [If you don’t release a clarification tonight, I’ll expose all the dirt I have. I mean it!]
After all these days, they were still playing dead and refusing to clarify anything?
Fine. She wouldn’t hold back either.
The response came instantly. [Sorry, I forgot.]
[Today’s your last chance. Otherwise, see you online!]
Jennifer didn’t bother being polite. She leaked some less critical

dirt directly, knowing it would cause trouble for the media
company.
After doing all that, she refused to take any of their calls.
