Chapter 247 His Change
A comforting warmth radiated from Timothy’s palm as Jennifer felt a silent reassurance seep into her very being.
The car’s interior was cozy.
Her eyelids grew heavier with each passing moment.
After a long while, Timothy glanced down at their joined hands and asked, “You hungry? Grandma said we should swing by the Clark Manor for dinner sometime when we’re free.”
Getting no immediate answer, he figured she was lost in thought.
A few more moments passed before he turned to look at her, only to find Jennifer fast asleep.
Her head had slowly slumped against the car window. With the gentlest of movements, he carefully pulled her into his arms, cradling her head against his shoulder.
Each movement was deliberate as if she were a delicate glass doll he feared shattering.
Finding a comfortable niche against him, Jennifer drifted deeper into slumber.
Timothy looked down at her, his lips curving into a gentle smile

he didn’t even realize he was wearing.
Soon, the sleek vehicle glided to a halt before King Villa.

Eric, peering back at the slumbering pair, exchanged a knowing glance with the driver. Both silently exited the car, leaving the two undisturbed within their cocoon of warmth.
The driver voiced a hushed whisper, “Shouldn’t we wake them? I mean, I don’t think Mr. Clark is actually asleep.”
“Nah,” Eric replied..
He fixed his eyes on the star–dusted canvas of the night sky as he thought, “It’s summer, thankfully. Not too chilly out here.”
“If Mr. Clark wanted out, he wouldn’t be holding Jennifer so close, now would he? And he sure wouldn’t have his eyes closed.”
“This means they’re good right where they are.”
“As a good secretary, I should know what my boss is thinking.”
Inside the car, they slept on, entwined.
Jennifer found herself drifting into a dream. She was back at the amusement park where she was kidnapped in her childhood. Her heart pounded in her chest as she ran. She was alone and terrified.
Suddenly, a hand grasped hers, pulling her forward.

She craned her neck to see the boy who saved her, but his face
was a blur.
She thought, “Who was he?”
“Had I bumped into someone else at the park that day?”
The dream shattered, and Jennifer awoke with a gasp.
Her eyes flew open to find Timothy looking down at her with a gentle expression. “Nightmare?” he asked.
The remnants of the dream clung to her, unsettling and strange.
Since the day she was kidnapped, her memories had become elusive. The enigmatic boy haunted her dreams. Who was he?
She failed to piece together the fragments of her past and confessed, “I dreamed about being kidnapped when I was little.”
Timothy’s brow furrowed. “You were kidnapped, too, as a child?”
“Because of that kidnapping, my parents were killed. The kidnappers murdered them.”
As the conversation drifted to bygone days, her expression clouded over with regret. “it I hadn’t been so stubborn, insisting that my parents take me to the amusement park that day, maybe none of this mess would’ve ever happened.”

Even though Jennifer knew the kidnapping was premeditated, the guilt was a constant companion.
It was why, when Asher had blamed her for their parents’ deaths, she hadn’t been able to utter a single word in her defense.
“It wasn’t your fault, Jennifer,” Timothy said. “If they were really after you, it means they’d been planning it for a while. If not the amusement park, it would’ve been somewhere else. There’s no way you could’ve known.”
“I know, logically,” she sighed, “but the guilt just never leave me alone.”
She looked at him and asked, “By the way. You said ‘too‘. Were you kidnapped as well?”
“Yeah, a long time ago,” he said.
Clearly, he wasn’t keen on diving into those old waters. With a swift pivot in conversation, he asked with a forced casualness, “So, you’re up now, huh?”
“Pretty much,” she replied, glancing at the sky outside. The first blush of dawn was painting the horizon.
Realization dawned on her. “Whoa, did we sleep in the car all night?”
“I just woke up myself,” he murmured.

Jennifer quickly rolled down the window, and the ever–present housekeeper and Eric approached. “Mrs. Clark, since you’re awake, why don’t you head upstairs, change, and get some
proper rest?”
Jennifer turned back to Timothy, a wave of guilt washing over her. “Why didn’t you wake me?” she asked.
She was aware of how drowsy she felt as the car hummed along the road. She’d intended to just doze for a bit, not fall into a deep sleep.
After all, Timothy had spent the entire year confined to his wheelchair. Contorting his body to sleep in the cramped
quarters of the car for a whole night must have been profoundly uncomfortable for him.
It was Eric who answered, “Mr. Clark was worried that if he woke you, you wouldn’t be able to get back to sleep.”
Timothy shot Eric a pointed look. “If you don’t have anything useful to say, it’s best to keep quiet.”
Heat rose to Jennifer’s cheeks. She knew that Timothy had endured the discomfort for her sake.
She hurried out of the car so that Timothy could head back to get some proper rest.
Once inside their bedroom, Jennifer couldn’t shake off the image of Timothy’s tightened expression. “Are you in a lot of pain?” she asked. “Let me give you a massage to help you relax.”

“There’s someone coming to do my rehab exercises soon,” he said. “You should rest.”

With a straightforwardness that left little room for argument, he declined her offer.
But Jennifer couldn’t simply dismiss her concern. After changing, she sought out Eric. “How is he, really?” she asked.
“Someone’s already in there giving Mr. Clark a recovery massage, Mrs. Clark. Don’t you worry,” he reassured her.
“But he looked like he was really hurting,” she insisted. “Should we take him to the hospital for a checkup?”
“I don’t think that’s necessary right now,” Eric replied. “Staying in the same position all night did cause some discomfort, but I assure you, Mr. Clark did it willingly.”
Jennifer’s eyes flickered, a spark of determination igniting within her.
Timothy’s leg treatment couldn’t be put off anymore. Time was running out.
