The look on Jerry’s face was utterly awkward.
To be honest, I could understand why he regretted it and why he came back to me.
For all the years we were together, he had had a luxurious life.
He didn’t need to work part–time like some of his college friends or worry about student loans. He didn’t have to stress about landing an internship or finding a job after graduation.
With me around, he didn’t have to struggle.
It’s easy to go from frugality to luxury, but going back from luxury to frugality? That’s tough.
He’d lived a good life, and now, because of our breakup, he had lost everything. I knew he couldn’t accept that.
Sadly, his youthful arrogance and the way I spoiled him made him realize this only now. He lowered his head, his face full of regret.
“Valerie, I was so angry at the time. You didn’t even give me a chance to explain.
I don’t want all these years of our relationship to end like this.
So, could you give me another chance to explain? Please?”
I raised an eyebrow, keeping my tone even. “Sure, just go ahead.”
Hearing my consent, Jerry seemed to see a glimmer of hope. His excitement grew.
He swallowed hard, and his eyes lit up again as he quickly said, “At that time, Sophia begged me.”
“Begged you for what?”
As I listened, I pulled out my phone from my bag.
“She begged me to get engaged,” he said.
“You have to believe me. I’ve never cheated on you when we were together.
The reason we had that engagement party was because Sophia’s relative passed away. The- inheritance had to be divided according to how many people each family had. They wanted to get more of it, so… they asked me to pretend to be engaged to her. Once the inheritance was divided, we’d tell her family we had broken up.
You have to believe me. I really… I’ve always had only you in my heart.
The promises I made to you back then were genuine.”
He gazed at me earnestly.
For a moment, I was really moved.
But it lasted only a second.
The whole inheritance situation with Sophia might have been true. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have risked pretending to be engaged to her.
But I couldn’t believe he hadn’t cheated.
I let out a cold laugh. “Is that all?”
“Valerie, I…”
“Get out when you’re done,” I said. “Find someone else to like. After all, I’m too old to match up With a handsome young man like you”

with a handsome young man like you.”
The light in his eyes dimmed almost instantly.
He stared at me in desperation.
“Ms. Morrison…”
Every time he used to upset me, he’d call me that.
It used to make me feel flattered like he cared.
But now, it only made me feel disgusted.
I frowned and sneered, “You got it wrong. I’m your mother.”
Jerry’s expression froze.
“Here’s a piece of advice. Don’t go around calling everyone ‘mom,” I said. “It’s pretty disgusting.”
I got Sophia’s WhatsApp number from Lucilla and sent Sophia the recording.
Lucilla looked embarrassed. “Sorry, Ms. Morrison, if it weren’t for me…”
“If it weren’t for you, I wouldn’t have realized I’d been turned into a mistress,” I interrupted he “So, I actually owe you one.”
“Then… what about you now?” Lucilla asked cautiously.
“I’m doing great,” I replied. “Are you free tomorrow?”
“Huh?” Lucilla was taken aback. “I guess so.”
“Alright, if you’re free, how about going to the amusement park with me tomorrow?”
After Jerry left, I suddenly realized something.
I realized
Even if I were eighty, I could still enjoy my life in any way I like.
that it was never too late to go to the amusement park.
