The day arrived when my custody would be
decided. Dad was confident I’d choose him.
After all, Mom was just a housewife. A
relationship without financial security was like a
house of cards.
But I just glanced at him and said firmly, “I’ll
stay with Mom. Make sure she gets a good
chunk of the money, though. I don’t want her
struggling.”
In the study, Dad tried to threaten me. “Your
mom said she’d give up everything if she could
have you.”
I sighed and played the video I’d downloaded
–
from his phone him and Melissa having a
little too much fun. “Dad, you’re going to have
your own family soon. Don’t fight Mom for me.
She only has me.”
Honestly, I wasn’t without resentment. But love was stronger. It kept me from getting bogged down in hatred, allowing me to move forward,
to embrace a new life.

Mom was actually a very capable woman. She
had just been blinded by love and family life. In my past life, Aunt Sarah had invited her to start
a business together several times, but Mom
was too consumed by grief to accept. This
time, all it took was a gentle nudge. She agreed
and became even more successful than I
imagined. She was more confident, more
vibrant. I liked this Mom better.
She wasn’t just a wife and a mother. She was
an independent woman.
And that was a beautiful thing.
