me, putting
incredibly romantic gesture.
Countless times, I had wanted him to paint a portrait of me.
Whenever I brought it up, Rylan would resignedly pull me into
his arms.
“Work’s too busy, and besides, we have cameras now. Who still does portrait paintings? It’s so old–fashioned.”
But now I see, it wasn’t about being too busy or old–fashioned. It was simply that I wasn’t worthy of that kind of love.
He was willing to paint hundreds of portraits for the girl he loved, even writing down his daily feelings stroke by stroke, yet he was too stingy to waste even a bit of ink on me.
The boastful tone in his voice during our recent phone call only made me laugh bitterly. Is this trash that others can’t even give away supposed to be a surprise I should be grateful for? It’s my turn to go through security.
I turn off my phone, take out the SIM card, and throw it in the trash.
At the same time, in the hospital room, Rylan feels an
inexplicable panic, his heartbeat getting faster and faster. The secretary bursts into the hospital room carrying a meal box, her face pale with fright.
“Mr. Sterling
Rylan’s eyes were fixed intently on the lunchbox.
“Why didn’t she get the sashimi? Isn’t that her favorite from
this place? What does it mean that it’s gone? Hasn’t Britta come
home?”
The secretary kept her head down as she handed a piece of paper to Rylan.
“She came home, but left again… I found this on the coffee
table…”
Rylan’s shoulders tensed suddenly, his eyes glued to the words
on the paper: Divorce Agreement.
But before he could speak, Lily, sitting on the hospital bed, let
out a derisive laugh.
“Does Britta have to be so childish? How long have you been married and she’s still playing these games of running away for
you to chase her? Isn’t it exhausting?”
“Oh Rylan, she’s just angry because you were harsh with her today. But it’s my fault too, why did I have to provoke her? I only wanted to explain things to her, but I didn’t expect her to have such a temper. Being with someone like her all these years must
have been so hard on you.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve seen plenty of women like her. She’s just
trying to manipulate you. She doesn’t actually dare to divorce You Where would an orphan like her go without you? You have
Rylan’s face turn
in his hand.
Two years of companionship, five years of marriage. For seven long years, they were nearly inseparable. Rylan knew Britta better than anyone else.
After losing her parents, Britta craved security above all else, which is why she never used divorce as a threat against him. Even now, Rylan vividly remembers the day he proposed to her. Britta’s eyes were brimming with tears, but her voice was
unwavering.
“Rylan, I’ll marry you, but you have to promise me one thing.” “If there ever comes a day when you don’t love me anymore, don’t lie to me. Tell me honestly, and I won’t cling to you.” “As long as you love me, no matter how much we argue, I will never threaten you with divorce.”
Thinking back on those words now, Rylan felt a chill run
through his entire body.
Britta’s love had always been straightforward and honest. She
never stooped to playing games of hard–to–get.
Seeing that Rylan hadn’t spoken, Lily began to panic.
“Rylan, you haven’t actually fallen for these cheap tricks, have row? I mean it’s understandable if you don’t get it since you’ve
never really dated
know them all too well.”
Hearing Lily continue on like this, Rylan now felt nothing but
irritation.
“Didn’t Britta tell you yesterday?”Let her call her sister–in–law.”
Lily, startled by Rylan’s sudden chill, scrambled to explain.
“I just wanted to get closer to her, you know? We’re sisters–in–law after all.”
“Don’t worry, Rylan. I think she’s just jealous that I’m pregnant and she can’t have kids. That’s why she went crazy today, hitting me and running away from home.”
“You know, right? Her parents are dead, and she’s had mental issues. She’s a nutcase with unstable emotions.
