Chapter 8
Even though we had dealt with the problem, I
knew Jess’s mother–in–law was vengeful. If
she couldn’t go after the Sterlings, she would
go after those she thought she could mess
with.
I booked a tour package for my parents.
Evelyn would often transfer money to me,
each time with a memo that said it was a
reward.
Ashley would finish half a bowl of rice
because she liked my cooking, I would get a
く
$20,000 reward. Just for smiling, I got
$8,000.
Before my first month was up, I had made
over $60,000 just from rewards.
That’s not even mentioning the bird nests,
cordyceps, and all those other expensive
health supplements that she’d give to me.
Every time I brought these things home, my
parents thought I had fallen into a pyramid
scheme, and told me to quit.
“Honey, we can’t accept money from
strangers.”
く
After a while, they finally believed that I had
found a good job with a generous boss.
Just as I expected, the old witch showed up
at my house in a few days.
She stood in front of my door, pounding on it.
When nobody answered, she started cursing,
thinking my parents were too afraid to come
out.
The new security camera at my door recorded
every single one of her angry, distorted facial
expressions.
“The Chu family is truly cursed, raising
someone like Chloe. That little weasel should
く
be working for her own family instead of
acting like someone else’s lapdog.”
“My daughter–in–law is so nice, she saw your daughter was unemployed, and was afraid
she’d starve, so she gave her a job, with food
and a monthly paycheck.”
“And what did your daughter do in return?
Not only did she not appreciate it, she even
dared to attack me, her elder! Is that the kind
of family values your family has?”
She went on and on, spitting everywhere,
clapping, and stamping her feet, yelling like a
crowd of people.
く
I watched her antics with my phone, like a
stand–up show.
Ashley had just finished feeding the baby. She
leaned over to ask me: “What are you looking at? You look so happy.”
I handed her my phone.
Usually, these types of rants would freak her
out. But this time, she seemed to enjoy it.
“You know, this is actually pretty
entertaining.”
We both looked at each other and laughed.
