- 6.
Dad’s buddies came in, happy and loud.
Then, seeing his hand raised, the mood went
sour.
Mom glared at him, then waved me over.
The firefighters tried to lighten the mood.
“Chief, we heard! Your wife and daughter are
blessed. What doesn’t kill you makes you
stronger!”
“How’s your leg?”
“You’re famous now! We’re all jealous.”
く
Dad scratched his head, embarrassed.
He always put on this simple act in front of
other people.
Who would guess he’d tried to kill me last
time?
“Don’t know if my leg will be okay. Nothing to
be jealous about.”
The guys waved it off.
“Haven’t you heard? You’re on TV!”
“You saved two people, you got hurt, the
department’s meeting, going to give you an
award. We hear they’re making you a deputy
chief!”
Deputy chief…
Right.
That happened last time.
He was so happy to get a promotion and a
dead wife.
Dad’s eyes lit up.
“Really?
I just did what we should do. No need to
make a fuss.”
Everyone laughed, then went to check on the
two women.
As I watched the scene, I was planning how to
ruin it.
No way I was letting them be happy this time.
