Chapter 40 Show Me the Evidence
Abigail and Anthony returned to their seats, the tension thick in the air. The courtroom remained silent for a moment before the judge spoke.
“Does either side have anything further to present?” she asked.
Felix rose from his seat, his expression composed but confident. “Regarding the issue of a broken marriage, the defendant seems to have many reasons and excuses to justify that the relationship hasn’t fallen apart. But now, I’d like to approach this from another angle and ask the defendant a question.”
Anthony glared at him, his jaw tightening as Felix smiled, clearly prepared for the next move.
“If you claim that your relationship isn’t broken, then how do you explain the presence of love between you two?” Felix asked, his voice cutting through the air. “Or to put it another way, how can you prove that you love her?”
Anthony’s face flickered with confusion, caught off guard by the question. “What are you saying?”
Felix leaned forward slightly, his voice steady. “How do you prove that
you love your wife? Have you ever celebrated her birthday? Have you ever cared for her when she was ill?”
Each question hit harder than the last, and with every word,

“Tell me, defendant,” Felix pressed on, his gaze unwavering, “what have you ever done for her? What makes you think you love her? Love isn’t just words–it’s shown through actions. So I ask you: is your marriage really intact, or did you never truly love her in the first place?”
The weight of the question hung heavy in the room, and for a moment, Anthony seemed unsure. His composure cracked as he slammed his fist onto the table.
“What right do you have to tell me there’s no love between us?” he spat. “Don’t think I don’t know what’s going on! You’re just waiting for me and Abigail to divorce so you can be with her. You two are the ones with the inappropriate relationship, not
me!”
The judge furrowed her brow, sensing Anthony’s growing agitation. “Defendant, please control your emotions,” she urged, her voice firm but calm.
But Anthony wasn’t listening. His anger only seemed to escalate. “These two are the ones with something to hide!” he shouted. “What kind of lawyer takes their client to an amusement park for a birthday? And she’s still working in his office! This proves everything about their improper relationship!”
He turned back to Abigail, his expression twisted with rage. “Abigail, is this how you want to get away from me? You think

you can just run off with him? Don’t forget, after you leave me, you’ll be a divorced woman, a mother with a child. You think you’ll be valuable to him? He’ll use you, then toss you aside. when he’s bored, just like trash. And when that happens, you’ll come crawling back to me, and I won’t even want you.”
As Anthony took a step toward her, Felix immediately stepped in, positioning himself between Abigail and Anthony, blocking the path. The tension in the room was unbearable.
Abigail’s heart was numb. The words Anthony spoke were harsh and cruel, but she had heard them all before. At this point, trying to explain herself felt pointless.
Some people simply refused to see things clearly.
The judge stood, signaling for order. “The defendant is becoming too emotional. We will recess for now. Both sides should take time to cool down before we continue the proceedings.”
Anthony’s lawyer quickly moved to intervene, trying to calm him down, but Anthony shrugged him off, his face flushed with fury.
“Abigail,” he hissed, turning back toward her with a sneer, “if you think this is just a game, if you’re doing this to get under my skin, then congratulations–you’ve succeeded. But let me make one thing clear: if you keep this up, I’ll take it all the
way. You want to divorce me and take half my money, then run off with this pretty boy? It’s never going to happen. I’ll make sure of it.” His voice was sharp, full of contempt and warning. It was clear he would stop at nothing to keep control, to keep Abigail bound

to him, even if it meant dragging her through the mud.

Abigail remained seated, silent, her gaze focused on the table in front of her.
Felix stood in front of her, his eyes locked on Anthony.
It was strange: though they were of similar height, Felix appeared even more thin than Anthony.
Yet, despite standing at eye level, there was an undeniable sense of authority in his posture–an impression that he towered over Anthony.
A faint, almost mocking smile tugged at the corner of Felix’s lips as he addressed him. “Mr. Robinson, Ms. Taylor and I have a clear and professional relationship. If you insist on tarnishing it, it will accomplish nothing. And as for your belief that she’s just throwing a tantrum… I honestly don’t know whether I should call you naive, or just overly self–assured.”
Anthony’s face turned ashen with anger. “You-!”
Felix stood his ground, his voice sharp as he continued, “Mr. Robinson, don’t you find it ridiculous? You claim you don’t love her, yet you refuse to let her go. What’s your end game here, exactly? What are you hoping to achieve by hurting both her and yourself?”
“Don’t you dare talk to me like that!” Anthony nearly exploded with fury.

One of the court staff quickly intervened, stepping between them and pulling Anthony back to create some distance.
“Sir, please calm down. This is a courtroom, not the place for personal arguments!”
Felix moved to sit beside Abigail, his eyes still locking with Anthony’s, as if daring him to respond.
The tension in the air was palpable, and sure enough, Anthony’s fury only intensified. Ignoring the staff, he lunged forward, ready to escalate the confrontation.
“What the hell are you so smug about?” he hissed, glaring at Felix. “Everyone knows Abigail loves me. She’s just throwing a fit, that’s all. You think you can just waltz in and take my place? Let me make this clear–unless we’re divorced, you and she don’t stand a chance.”
Before he could finish his rant, court staff and his own lawyer quickly rushed to pull him away, escorting him to the break room to cool off.
The courtroom fell into an eerie quiet as only Abigail and Felix remained.
Felix turned his attention to her, his expression softening for a
moment.
“Are you alright?” he asked quietly.
Abigail nodded, wiping her eyes. “I’m fine,” she replied, her

voice steady despite the storm of emotions inside her.

Meanwhile, in the break room, Anthony sat, brooding, trying to regain control of his emotions. The minutes dragged on, and just when he was starting to settle, his phone rang. Jason’s name flashed on the screen.
“How’s it going, Anthony? Everything smooth?” Jason’s voice was filled with amusement, but Anthony’s scowl deepened.
“Just spit it out,” he muttered, his voice clipped.
“Ha, sounds like things aren’t going well,” Jason leased. “So what’s the deal? Abigail really seems set on going through with this, huh?”
Anthony fell silent. He had assumed Abigail’s behavior was just a phase, a tantrum she’d eventually grow out of, but the more he thought about it, the more uneasy he became.
She was no longer the woman who would stop at nothing to keep their family together. Now, she was barely even speaking to Marcus, their child.
Jason waited for a response, but none came. He was about to speak again when Morgan suddenly grabbed the phone from his hand.
“Anthony,” Morgan’s voice was low but sharp, “this woman- you can’t let her walk all over you. Do you even want to divorce her?”

Anthony’s usual air of superiority faltered. He had always acted like he didn’t care, like Abigail was beneath him, but his friends had known him too long.
They could tell he didn’t want to lose her, despite everything.
Jason slapped Morgan’s hand away. “Come on, man. This isn’t just some breakup. Divorce isn’t easy or clean. And Marcus is still a kid. You can’t just toss her aside like that.”
Morgan wasn’t done, though. “Listen, Anthony,” he said, hist tone dripping with mockery, “don’t worry too much. You know how women like Abigail are–they get all worked up and emotional, but they’ll come around. She’s a love–sick fool who can’t just let go of you. She’s not really going anywhere. She just wants you to give her something. Let her think she’s got you right where she wants you. If you don’t give her what she wants, she’ll cry about it for a while. But in the end, when things get tough, she’ll come running back. And then, when you ‘rescue‘ her, she’ll fall right into your arms again, just like she always does.”
