Chapter 55 Canary’s Counterattack
It took a while for Laura to calm down, her emotions finally settling into a fragile peace.
In the meantime, Abigail slipped into the hallway to call Felix.
“I need to take a day off,” she said, her voice strained.
Felix didn’t hesitate. “Taking a day off before your internship is
even over…”
Abigail thought he might be unhappy and wanted to explain the reason, but then she hesitated, feeling that it might not be wise to share too many family matters.
“I really have some pressing matters to deal with. Just dock my pay if you have to,” she replied, biting her lip.
Felix remembered the last time she had been in a tough spot, how she had ended up completely out of it while thinking about her wages.
The fact that she was now willing to forfeit her wages told him she was in serious trouble.
“Alright, if you need anything, just give me a shout,” he said.
“Thanks.”

After hanging up, Abigail barely had time to take a seat before the surgery room doors swung open.
The doctor emerged, and both Laura and Abigail rushed toward him.
“Doctor, how did it go?”
“Is my dad okay?”
The doctor nodded. “He’s stable. We got him here in time for a bypass surgery, and he’s out of immediate danger. However, he’ll need to rest and avoid any emotional stress for a while.”
A wave of relief washed over both women.
Moments later, Charles was wheeled out and transferred to a hospital room.
Knowing he would be staying for a few days, Abigail reassured Laura and confirmed that Charles was alright before heading downstairs to pick up some essentials for his stay.
Fortunately, there was a supermarket right below the hospital.
Abigail grabbed a few bed pads, a basin, some toiletries, and snacks, then headed back with a hefty bag in tow.
Felix had arrived early that morning to meet with a client about a complicated medical dispute.
Before he could meet the client, he spotted Abigail struggling

“Hey, what’s this?” he said, rushing over to take the bag from
her.
Abigail blinked in surprise. “What are you doing here?”
Felix shot her a look. “Shouldn’t I be asking you that? Is this your idea of an urgent matter?”

Seeing her pale face, he realized she was definitely dealing with something serious.
He held the bag as they walked together.
“My dad’s in the hospital. I didn’t want to bother you with my family issues, so I thought I could handle it myself…”
Felix frowned, sensing her reluctance to rely on him.
“Abigail, do you really think we’re just boss and employee?”
As they stepped into the elevator, Abigail pondered his words.
After a moment, she replied, “You’re Amy’s cousin.”
That answer didn’t sit well with him. His expression darkened.
“Wrong answer. Try again.”
Abigail hesitated, then tentatively said, “Friends?”
Chapter 55 Canary’s Counterattack His demeanor softened a little.
“Exactly. You shouldn’t keep something like your dad’s hospitalization from me. I might be able to help.”

Abigail knew Felix had a vast network of contacts, but she was reluctant to owe him too many favors unless it was absolutely
necessary.
The more she owed, the more difficult it would be to repay.
As they walked toward the hospital room, Felix asked, “How did he end up in here in the first place?”
Abigail’s voice dropped. “It’s Anthony.”
The anger from yesterday’s party had clearly set Anthony off. He could tell Abigail wasn’t going to let him control her anymore, so he decided to strike where it hurt–her family.
The move was ruthless, and it felt like a direct hit to Abigail’s
core.
Felix muttered under his breath, “What a piece of work.”
Abigail let out a weary sigh. “He’s always been this way. He wants to control me, to make sure I abide by his wishes. Now that I, his little canary, am trying to break free from my cage, he’s bound to show me just how serious he is.”
What really stung was the fact that when it came to the Taylor family situation, she felt utterly powerless.

A wave of regret washed over her as she thought of her choice to study law instead of finance. If she had taken that path, she might have been in a position to help her family right now.
Noticing Abigail’s despondency, Felix halted in his tracks, prompting her to stop as well and look at him.
“What’s going on?”
Felix met her gaze, his expression solemn.
He said, “If the canary wants to fight back, it needs to do so decisively. Don’t let small challenges scare you into submission. That would only reinforce the notion that you’re still a canary. The moment he raises a finger, you’d revert right back to him.”
People were like that–they pushed their luck.
If one made a fuss only to back down after a couple of times, eventually, it created a false sense of security for the other side.
They began to believe that no matter what one did, the outcome remained the same, and one would always come back to them.
This only emboldened them to inflict even more harm.
Abigail understood Felix’s message loud and clear, taking a deep breath to steady herself. “Don’t worry; I’m resolute about this.”
With that, the two of them walked into the hospital room.

Chapter 55 Canary’s Counterattack Charles was still unconscious, and Laura was gently wiping hist face from her spot by the window.
When they entered, she stood up, looking slightly bewildered.
“Mom, this is my friend Felix Rowe,” Abigail introduced him.
Felix stepped forward, extending his hand for a shake. Laura wasted no time in scrutinizing him from head to toe, her eyes narrowing with approval as she nodded.
“Hello there!” she said warmly.
“Hi, nice to meet you,” Felix replied, his demeanor friendly.
He deposited the supplies on the sofa and started rearranging the toiletries in the bathroom.
As Abigail moved closer to check on Charles, Laura leaned in, lowering her voice but with a hint of a smirk.
“This young man seems pretty impressive–handsome and well–presented. How did you two meet?”
Realizing her mother likely had her own interpretations, Abigail glanced towards the bathroom to confirm Felix was still occupied and not within earshot.
She then said, “Mom, what are you talking about? We’re not like that.”
Laura pouted slightly, her teasing aura still palpable. “Just

because you’re not like that now doesn’t mean it can’t turn into something. I think he’s a real catch!”
Abigail let out an exasperated sigh. “Mom, I haven’t even
finalized my divorce from Anthony yet.”
Laura waved her off dismissively. “So what? Does it really
matter? Why should he get to run wild while we have to sit here with nothing but a sad little single life?”
Abigail was taken aback by how modern her mother’s views
were.
Just then, Felix emerged from the bathroom, cutting off any further conversation.
He announced, glancing around, “Everything’s arranged. Is there anything else you need? I can get someone to bring it
over.”
Laura took his hands and led him to the sofa.
“You’re such a good boy. We have everything we need for now.”
Laura’s gaze was fixed on Felix, and surprisingly, he didn’t seem uncomfortable at all.
“By the way, I’m arranging for two caregivers to come help you both out. It’ll be easier than the two of you trying to manage everything on your own,” Felix said matter–of–factly.
Laura nodded in appreciation. “That would be wonderful.
Chapter 55 Canary’s Counterattack
Thank you for taking care of this, Felix. I truly appreciate it.”
