Abigail poured a glass of wine, and everyone followed suit, raising their glasses. She said, “I’m really glad to be working alongside everyone. I’ve been with the company for a few days, but for various reasons, I haven’t had the chance to meet everyone and get to know you properly.
“I apologize for disturbing your work today. I’m very grateful for all of you accepting me. This drink is to you all. I hope you enjoy the night and have a great time.” With that, Abigail was the first to down her drink in one go.
The others quickly followed, and the party officially began. The atmosphere was lively, and no one seemed awkward, even with Felix around.
In fact, Abigail was the only one struggling to adjust to the lively energy of the crowd. She was used to the atmosphere but now found herself unsure of how to blend in. She remembered how she used to love going out with friends and classmates to parties like this, but that was before her marriage.
Abigail sat on the sofa, holding her drink alone, and after a few sips, Felix joined her after chatting with others. He took a few more drinks before sitting beside her. “What’s on your mind? Still feeling lost?”

Abigail shook her head. “No, I just think the atmosphere is really good. It’s clear you’re a good boss.”

Felix, clearly pleased with the compliment, smirked and raised an eyebrow. “I’m not just a good boss.”
Abigail teased him, laughing, “If you’re going to get flustered just because someone praises you, you should learn to be a bit more humble.”
Felix gave her a serious look. “Abigail, I’m serious. You’ll see the good in me. Just wait.”
Before she could respond, a few of the guys pulled Felix away to sing. Abigail watched him leave and chuckled before taking another sip of her drink.
Not long after, Sophia came over, wearing a mysterious expression as she looked at Abigail. “Abigail, tell me honestly, what’s your relationship with Mr. Rowe?”
Abigail froze. “I’m his assistant.”
Sophia rolled her eyes. “Duh, everyone knows you’re his assistant. I mean, come on, what’s going on between you two? You and Mr. Rowe…” Sophia looked at her with a playful expression, clearly expecting some juicy gossip.
Abigail felt uneasy under Sophia’s gaze. Even if she wasn’t particularly sharp and had little experience in the workplace, she could tell from Sophia’s probing question that rumors were already circulating in the office about her and Felix’s

Abigail’s unease grew. She thought, “Could it be that everyone thinks I am not qualified to be Felix’s assistant? Maybe that’s why they’re speculating about my relationship with him.”
A sudden thought crossed her mind. Abigail thought again, “Could it be because of Amy that Felix has hired me as his assistant despite my lack of qualifications? Does everyone think I have gotten the job through backdoor connections?”
Feeling uncertain, she shook her head. “There’s nothing between Mr. Rowe and me that you don’t already know.”
Sophia saw Abigail wasn’t going to say anything more and didn’t press her. She patted Abigail on the shoulder. “Alright, I’ll let it go. But just so you know, I think you’re great.”
Abigail smiled faintly and clinked her glass with Sophia’s before taking a sip. Sophia then joined the others, and Abigail was left sitting there, watching Felix and getting lost in thought.
She pondered, “Could it be true? Has everyone guessed right? Is Felix really just doing this for Amy, offering me the assistant position because of Amy? He was afraid to hurt my pride by revealing the truth, so he didn’t tell me.
He has the means to choose anyone, so why would he pick me–someone without a proper qualification, without even a certificate, let alone work experience? Felix’s reasons have seemed convincing at the time, but now they don’t add up.” The more Abigail thought about it, the more suspicious she became.

Before Abigail could think too much, the familiar melody of a classic song started playing, catching everyone’s attention. The song was “Those Years“, chosen by Felix. He stood at the center of the room, holding a microphone.
Since it was a classic everyone knew and could sing along
to, the crowd was quickly drawn into the nostalgia by the accompaniment. They all started clapping along to the rhythm, looking at Felix as they did.
This wasn’t Abigail’s first time hearing Felix sing. She remembered that back in college, during a school event, she had heard Felix perform. Even though they hadn’t known each other then, Felix was already a well–known figure on campus, the cold–faced law school heartthrob everyone knew.
Abigail vividly remembered that day. Felix had sung “Those Years” then too. She had listened intently, partly because she liked music but also because his rendition of the song stood out from the others.
The original version was filled with a sense of nostalgia for youth and past relationships. But Felix’s version that day, dressed in a white shirt, blue jeans, and white sneakers, was full of youthful
energy.
Yet when he had sung, there was a kind of unspoken regret in his voice. It was that unique quality that drew Abigail and many of their classmates in. Now, as she watched Felix again, she couldn’t help but look forward to hearing his voice once more.

But this time, when Felix started singing, it was strangely devoid of that lingering sense of regret. As the song reached its climax, there was an unspoken intensity in his voice, as if the boy tying his tie in front of the mirror was destined to embrace the girl he loved. The song and his voice were powerful, almost infectious.
When Felix finished, Abigail was left stunned. This time, his rendition of the same song felt worlds apart from how he had sung it years ago. Both performances were beautiful, yet they conveyed entirely different emotions.
As the song ended, Sophia was the first to clap, and the rest of the group quickly joined in. Abigail snapped out of her daze and, after a brief pause, stood up to applaud as well.
Meanwhile, on the other side of the room, Amy crouched by the door, secretly peering through the crack to observe the scene inside. Once she confirmed that both Abigail and Felix were there, she rushed back to the bar, pulled out her phone, and started composing a message.
She sent it to a group chat called “Matchmaker“, a group they had created after their camping trip. Amy sent a message: [Tonight is Felix’s company party. Abigail is with him. We can put our plan into motion tonight.]
Gavin replied: [Are you sure this will work? Something about it feels off to me.]
Sunny answered: [Who cares if it works or not? It’s worth trying. What if it actually happens?]
