After I was hit and had a miscarriage, my childhood sweetheart removed my uterus
Chapter 1
The day I was supposed to say “I do,” a drunk
driver totaled my car and stole my baby.
I was bleeding out, screaming for help that
never came. The guy I was supposed to marry?
He didn’t bother showing up. Instead, he was
busy down at the country club, celebrating his
engagement to his childhood sweetheart with
everyone we knew.
“Guess that’s that,” Chad texted, like ditching
me on the side of the road was no big deal.
“The kid’s gone, so the wedding’s off.”
My best friend, Liam, found me. He’d blown off
some competition out of state, and showed up
in record time. He was covered in dirt, his face

was white as a sheet. Liam’s always been the
kind of guy who’d drop everything for you.
I ended up with a bum leg from the wreck. Liam didn’t give a damn. He proposed right there in the hospital, swearing he’d love me forever.
But three days before the wedding, I found his medical report. Apparently, while I was
unconscious, Liam had a doctor take out my
uterus.
That night, I followed Liam. I watched him
making out with Bethany, his tongue down her
throat in his truck.
“Liam, do you ever regret what you did to her,
turning her into a cripple and taking away her chance to have kids?” Bethany asked, her voice syrupy sweet.
Liam just pulled her closer, his hand
disappearing under her skirt. “Honey, for you,

I’d do anything. Even be stuck with a cripple for
the rest of her life.”
I thought he was my savior, but it turned out he
was just another kind of hell.
Well, screw that noise.
The dome light cast everything in a sleazy glow,
illuminating them writhing like they were
stranded on the open ocean.
My leg throbbed, making me stagger on the ice.
Liam always made a big show of how respectful he was, barely holding my hand, saying he
wanted to wait until we were married.
Now I knew what it was really about.
He was turned off by my disability.
My crutches slipped, and I nearly ate it.
Fumbling, I grabbed my phone.
The dome light went off and I heard the seats
moving back in Liam’s truck.
Three days until our wedding, and he couldn’t
wait, opting for a little midnight rendezvous.
Tears blurring my vision, I took a deep breath
and dialed a number.
“Professor Evans? It’s me, Sophie. I’ve decided.
I’m coming to Cambridge and joining the
research team.”
The sounds of passion grew louder in the truck.
Separated by a pane of glass, I watched him.
with dead eyes.
Liam and I have known each other our whole
lives. I’d never seen him so feral.
He said he’d been in love with me for years. I

believed him, damn it. After all this time, I finally
understood how badly I misjudged things.
“Sophie, that’s fantastic! We’re thrilled to have
you!”
The call ended. My crutch clattered on the
concrete floor, the sound amplified in the empty
garage.
“Who’s there?!”
The lights flashed back on. Liam wiped lipstick
from his mouth. When he saw me, his face went
white.
Trying to keep it together, I swallowed the bile
rising in my throat. I pretended not to smell
Bethany’s cheap perfume.
“What are you doing up so late?”
Acting like nothing was wrong, Liam glanced

back to make sure Bethany was hidden from
view. Then he forced a smile.
All sunshine and roses, he wrapped his jacket
around me, flashing a glimpse of a h
