Chapter 14
I scanned the unfamiliar room, my gaze lingering on the cool–toned decor that filled the space with an air of quiet elegance.
It wasn’t until I noticed the photo on the desk that the realization hit me, I was now an engaged woman, brought back to my
fiancé‘ s house.
Memories of last night flooded back, and I winced, recalling how I had drunkenly clung to him and babbled nonsense. Embarrassment washed over me, and I silently wished I could disappear. I could only hope he didn’t see me as frivolous.
After freshening up, I made my way

downstairs with caution, each step deliberate
in this strange new environment.
On the first floor, Lucas was at the kitchen island, cooking breakfast. Dressed in simple loungewear, he looked less like the composed man from yesterday and more like someone entirely different, gentle, and approachable.
Even in the mundane setting of a kitchen, his noble, elegant presence was unshaken. I couldn’t help but stop and admire him as if he were a work of art.
Noticing me, Lucas flashed a smile and waved.
“Avery, come here.”
I walked toward him, unable to suppress a flutter in my chest.

“This is my first time making Buttermilk
Biscuits. Try it and tell me how it tastes.‘
He placed a warm bowl of Buttermilk Biscuits in front of me.
I blinked in surprise and looked up at him.
“How did you know I like Buttermilk Biscuits?”
“Didn’t you visit the Spencer house often when you were younger?”
Although I couldn’t recall much, it seemed he remembered my childhood better than I
did.
I took a bite, and the rich buttery flavor made me smile.
“It’s delicious. Really good.”

“Then sit down and enjoy.”
With thoughtful care, he pulled out a chair for me and then served a small bowl of porridge, blowing on it before placing it gently before
- me.
“Be careful, it’s hot.”
His attention to detail had me wondering, had he learned all this from a past girlfriend?
Seated across from me, as graceful and composed as always, I gathered my courage to ask, “Mr. Spencer, can I ask you
something?”
He put down his spoon, leaning in slightly, his eyes softening as they met mine.
“Avery, we‘ re engaged now. You don’t

need to call me ‘Mr. Spencer‘ anymore.”
That was true.
Before this, I’d always addressed him like I had with William- “Uncle.” But now, suddenly his fiancée, I didn’t know what to call him.
After a moment‘ s hesitation, I ventured,
“Mr… Lucas?”
He paused, a hint of a smile tugging at his lips, before giving a reluctant nod.
“Alright. What’s your question?”
“Why… why do you want to marry me?”
His expression didn’t change, as if he had been expecting this very question.
With no rush, he wiped his mouth with a

napkin before answering,
“When you were little, I thought you were adorable. Now that you’ve grown up, I think you‘ re remarkable. So, I decided I wanted to marry you.”
“Lucas, you’re not being entirely honest.”
I knew my worth.
In education, talent, and family, I wasn’t lacking.
But compared to the socialites and heiresses in his world, I didn’t hold a candle.
“Avery, love doesn’t need a reason.”
He reached over, gently ruffling my hair, the simple act sending warmth flooding through
- me.
Chapter 14
“Finish your breakfast. I’ve got something important to talk to you about afterward.”
I lowered my gaze, focusing back on my meal.
After breakfast, I insisted on washing the dishes.
When I returned, Lucas was sitting on the sofa, his focus entirely on the tablet in his hands.
I walked over, but before I could speak, he gently pulled me down beside him and handed me the tablet.
“William came to the Spencer estate in Riverdale this morning, making a scene and demanding to see you. Grandpa had him escorted out.”
Chapter 14
I stared at the surveillance footage in disbelief, the image of William storming through the gates playing out before my eyes.
