After rebirth, I tore apart the fake
intern
Chapter 1
The new intern at work was a freakin‘ space
cadet.
I told her to be in the fourth–floor conference
room at nine the next morning, and she
blinked those innocent, Bambi eyes at me.
“Nine PM is kinda late, isn’t it? I get off at
five.”
I clarified, “Nine AM.” She just stared. “But
it’s already noon! Why didn’t you tell me
sooner?”
I bit back the urge to scream and forced
myself to stay calm. “It’s for tomorrow
morning, nine AM.”
Finally, she seemed to get it. But then, “So,
like, where is it?”
I figured she was playing dumb, trying to get
out of the meeting. Since she was just an
intern, I almost said, “Forget it.”
Then, right in the middle of our meeting, she
barges in, and in front of the boss, asks me
why I didn’t tell her about it.
“Seriously, like, I really wanna learn stuff
during this internship! Can you please stop
sabotaging me?”
Even my boyfriend chimed in, siding with her.
“She’s been complaining about the company
for weeks. Probably trying to get fired so she
can collect unemployment. Definitely not
doing her job!”
The boss canned me on the spot and
blacklisted me in the industry. Couldn’t handle
- it. I ended up hanging myself at the office.
Then I woke up, and it was the day the intern
started.
- 1.
“We got five new interns. Each of you take
one, show ‘em the ropes.”
My manager’s voice snapped me awake.
Standing in front of me were five interns,
fresh out of college and eager to please.
“Ashley, we’ve got a new intern from your
Г
Hearing that, I knew I had a second chance.
Before he could finish the sentence, I cut him
off. “Nope, can’t do it.”
I gave the manager my best smile, trying to
soften the blow. “I’ve got way too much on
my plate right now, a mountain of paperwork.
I wouldn’t want to overwhelm the new kid.”
He knew my workload, since he assigned it to
- me. He nodded. “Alright, fair enough. I’ll give
you a guy. He can help you out.”
Anyone but Lily.
But that wasn’t enough. I pointed over to
Mike. “Why not give her to him? The three of
us went to the same school.”
Lily piped up. “Yeah, I’d love to learn from
Mike!”
Five interns all paired up. I walked back to my
desk with my new intern and assigned him
some busy work.
A few minutes later, my phone buzzed. It was
Mike, texting me.
He wanted to know why I didn’t want to take
Lily under my wing. As if he didn’t see what a
nightmare she was. He complained that being
a guy, he’d be less helpful to her.
As if they weren’t sleeping together last time!
I sent Mike a smiley face and turned off my
phone.
く
That was all it took to get rid of her.
During lunch, I asked Lily to order takeout for
- me. I specified I was allergic to seafood and
to order anything that wasn’t that.
The order arrived and it was clam chowder.
I stared at her, thinking it must be a mistake.
She just shrugged. “Nope! This place has the
best clam chowder. You have to try it!”
“Even though it’s clam chowder, you can just
drink the broth and not eat any of the clams!
It’s not that bad!”
