The second I turned around, the floor started to
shake.
One by one, the kids climbed out from
underneath.
When they were all standing there, parents
realized there were thirty of them, every single
one!
The kids looked at me with gratitude and hero
worship.

“Thank you for saving us, Ms. Sarah! You’re the
best!”
Surprise, shock, relief, and pure gratitude filled
the room.
Some parents, seeing their kids back from the
“dead,” were crying uncontrollably.
Each kid ran to their mom, dad, grandma, or
grandpa, laughing and crying with joy.
The cop who was about to cuff me, relaxed,
smiled, and put the handcuffs away.
He said, “Since the kids are fine, the charge of
attempted murder is dropped.”
“As for negligence and arson, since the first
charge was false, we need to investigate
further.”

Then he turned to Ashley. “We appreciate
concerned citizens reporting crimes, but false
reports are punishable. Otherwise, everyone
would be reporting everything with no evidence.
It wastes police resources.”
Ashley started breathing really fast.
Her face went white, and sweat dripped down
her face. She almost fell over.
Mike caught her, glaring at me.
I didn’t miss the hatred in his eyes. It made my
heart turn to ice.
Before the kids appeared, I’d tried to get more
info out of Mike and Ashley.
I got lucky.
From their looks and actions, it was clear they
<
were having an affair!
No wonder Mike hadn’t been the same.
He’d snap at me for not wearing makeup or say
my clothes were embarrassing.
He’d complain about my taste in movies, saying
I didn’t appreciate “art.”
When I complained about the parents who were
obsessed with Ashley, he’d explode, calling me
a jealous witch.
Then he’d leave, saying I needed to think about
my behavior.
I never understood.
I was a kindergarten teacher. I dealt with three
to five–year–olds.
Ashley wore too much makeup, perfume, high

heels, and long nails.

Several kids were getting nosebleeds and skin
rashes.
I’d told the principal, but she said I was
overreacting and should be patient with the new
teacher.
I didn’t understand why the principal was
protecting Ashley, so I told Mike.
That’s when he called me jealous.
Before I died, I wondered if I was wrong.
Thank God I got a second chance.
The problem wasn’t me.
It was Mike and Ashley.
