Chapter 5
At those words, the admiring voices around us fell silent. The neighbors exchanged
uneasy glances, instinctively backing away, careful to distance themselves from the
situation, fearing they might get caught up in it.

My parents panicked. They grabbed Kathy’s sleeves tightly. “Kathy, what‘ going on? Who called the police? Wasn‘ t Mr. Miles supposed to take you out on a date? This must be a misunderstanding, right?”
Kathy‘ s smug expression froze, her eyes quickly shifting from panic to an arrogant disregard, as if she didn’t care at all.
She spoke haughtily, her tone full of arrogance, “I’m Kathy Holmes. You must have gotten this wrong! What rumors? There’s nothing of the sort. I’m the future Mrs. Miles, Mr. Miles’s fiancée. Do you even know who the Miles Family is?”

“Whoever made this false report, go find them! I’m about to meet my fiancé. If you delay me, even ten of you won’t be able to compensate for the time wasted!”
I stood off to the side, unable to hold back a laugh at her shamelessness. “Actually, sis, I don’t think Mr. Miles has ever said he‘ s going to marry you. And he certainly never said he was taking you out on a date. Isn’t that spreading rumors?”
I then turned to the police officers. “You haven’t mistaken her. It’s her. Please, take her away.”
Kathy’s face turned red with rage at my words.
The neighbors began to gossip as they heard our conversations.
“So she was lying all along! I knew it, how could someone like Mr. Miles, such an important figure, possibly be interested in someone like her… a cheap trick?”
“Claiming to have a fiancé when there’s

no sign of anything–she’s shameless. A woman like this would‘ ve been drowned in a pig’s cage back in the old days!”
“Maybe she’s already sneaked into Mr. Miles‘ s bed? I heard just a few days ago that Mr. Miles was drugged and she’s probably the one who did it! She looks so presentable, but her true nature is so desperate…‘
“Imagine what kind of parents would encourage their daughter to do something like this? Look at her parents, they‘ re no better. We should stay away, don’t want to end up in Mr. Miles‘ s bad books.”
My parents‘ faces were flushed with rage. Kathy, furious, stormed up to me and slapped me across the face with all her might.
“You bitch! I knew you were jealous of me! You must’ve been the one who called the police!”
“No wonder you didn’t say anything earlier

I covered my face, my eyes filled with nothing but disappointment.
I’ve always known my parents didn’t like me. However, I never expected them to blame me for all of Kathy’s mistakes!
“I didn’t call the police. I’ve already said I’m leaving the house. Whatever happens here is none of my business!”
“I don‘ t care if you end up becoming the in–laws of the Miles Family or end up on the streets.”
“Dad, Mom, I’m your daughter too. Why do you always favor Kathy?”
