The next day, I went to the hospital for tests.
When I took off my shirt, even the nurse
gasped.
I was covered in scars.
Some of them were still healing.
It looked like I couldn’t feel pain.
I just let the nurse do the tests.
The results came back quickly.
I had a lot of problems.
Heavy anemia, damaged lungs, and I was
L
even missing some of my hair.
I couldn’t even donate a kidney even if I
wanted to!
Ashley didn’t listen to the nurse.
When I told her I couldn’t do the surgery, she
thought I was messing with her.
“Ryan, are you playing games?
Didn’t the mental hospital teach you
anything?
I knew you wouldn’t donate it!”
“Fine! What do you want?
I can’t do the surgery anyway!”
She grabbed the organ donation agreement
and forced me to sign it.
The nurse stepped in.
“This patient isn’t fit for surgery!
It’s a death sentence.”
But Ashley didn’t listen.
The report fell and landed at Emily’s feet.
She picked it up and looked at me.
<
“Ryan, Emily and I are getting married.
I’ll do anything for you, except give her up!”
Emily raised her lips a bit.
“After all these years, are you still not over
me?
I’ve told you, I never liked you!”
She handed the report to Dad.
Dad looked at me in shock.
He didn’t understand how I could be so calm,
or why I was so damaged.
He hesitated, then turned away.
Even when Mom wanted to see the report, he
changed the subject.
I didn’t ask for anything.
I just signed the paper.
The surgery was scheduled for tomorrow.
