Ashley was nowhere to be seen that night,
but Emily came.
“I broke off the engagement with Brandon!”
She looked tired.
She grabbed my hand.
“Ryan, I realized that I love you!
I didn’t want to get married because I was pressured by my family.
That’s why I was always cold to you!”
“I was wrong.
Can you forgive me?
We can get married whenever you want.”
My childhood dream was so close, but it
wasn’t my dream anymore.
“Emily, I don’t like you anymore!”
I stared at her, like I meant it.
I really didn’t care about her anymore.
“I don’t believe you!”
She yelled.
“You’re just saying that.”
“Calm down!”
I said.
Just like she had told me.
“We’re adults.
We need to pay the consequences!”
Had it been a short five years?
She didn’t know that unanswered love always
goes away.
“No! You’re mine! You will be mine!”
She ran away.
That night, I got a call from one of her
friends.
“Ryan! You need to come see Emily. She’s drinking to die!”
I used to care about Emily and told her to eat
and drink and be healthy.
But she would say.
“I hate guys like that. Always trying to give a
girl attention.”

I was a Miller, so who would dare to say that
to my face?
Emily.
I wasn’t stupid anymore.
“I can’t. Why don’t you call Brandon? He can
help!”
There was silence.
Then Emily grabbed the phone.
“Ryan, you’re so happy to give me to
someone else!”
I didn’t say anything.
“Think whatever you want!”
I hung up.
